Global Again Dumps Simsub Of 60 Minutes and Equalizer

What is becoming more and more common, Global this evening ran 60 Minutes at the scheduled time of 7pm  rather than wait for the football game on CBS to finish opting not to simulcast the latest episode of the newsmagazine. This also means that The Equalizer won't be simulcast either at 9pm on Global, since CBS is about 35 minutes behind on this evenings programming.

In fact tonight, other than football on CTV and a movie on CTV2 there isn't that much simulcasting this evening on Canadian TV.

CTV hasn't been simulcasting the number one prime time import show either.  Tracker runs on CBS tonight and CTV will run the program tomorrow since they have the Eagles vs Rams game on this evening.

I'm not sure which CBS affiliate you get on your cable system, but I can tell you without any doubt that "60 Minutes" ran exactly as scheduled on WIVB from Buffalo at exactly 7 PM, one of the first times since the NFL resumed that it actually started on time.

Global also aired it at 7 o'clock, with perhaps a 1-2 second head start. I don't have cable, but I feel confident that simsub was definitely in place for a large number of Southern Ontario viewers. I watched it myself on Channel 4, so I know for a fact it aired in its usual timeslot.

It's possible Detroit (if that's what you get) aired an entirely different game and it ran late (like nearly every football game in recorded history) so perhaps that's what you saw. But viewers in T.O., at the very least, got the duplicated signal.

Yes, I receive Detroit and not Buffalo on Bell Fibe.  Global's schedule on Sunday fairly regularly skips simsub.  When the game runs over on Buffalo TV does Global still simsub?  I remember you saying last spring that Global ran programming at their regular times on a few occasions and not tethered to CBS.

Re: Global Again Dumps Simsub Of 60 Minutes and Equalizer

I think it depends. Last week, if I recall correctly, the game ran long and Global subbed with "Border Security" to fill the time. (They sometimes cut if off in mid-show to get to the CBS line-up, which must irritate viewers who like the program or wanted to see how it ends.)

But in the past, they've often gone with "60 Minutes" right at 7 PM. I have no idea how they make this decision. I'm also curious how the cable companies handle the simsub issue with so many different time zones and different games on so many different CBS affils across the country. Sounds horribly confusing and there's no way of ever predicting how long the delay will last. (I remember when CHCH had the "60" rights, they'd air live news up until CBS started the show. That made for some very long nights for those involved in producing the headlines.)

And by the way as a total aside, for anyone who likes "60 Minutes" but may be on the road when it's on, it airs over the radio on WBBM-AM Chicago at precisely 7 PM, regardless of what's going on over on the TV side. True, it's missing the visual component, but that's rarely a big part of their stories. I was listening to Sunday night's episode while I was out walking the dog and it was great.

If you don't know what Fox did...

Re: Global Again Dumps Simsub Of 60 Minutes and Equalizer

I think I can solve this issue. FOX had the DH game yesterday SF@GB 90% of the U.S. or Ariz@Seattle seen in Arizona Washington and Montana. CBS offered a single game only. WIVB carried the KC/Carolina game at 1pm, so there would be a 60 Minutes simsub at 7pm. Now in Detroit The Lions were playing Indianapolis at 1pm on FOX. NFL rules state that in an NFL market no other game can be televised in that market while the team is playing whether at home or on the road. This is why CBS Detroit was required to air the 4:05 Denver/LV game. CBS affilliates in Minneapolis, Chicago, Indianapolis and Washington D.C. also carried this 4:05 game because their markets respective teams were playing at 1pm. I watched the end of this game online and it did indeed run past 7pm. So CBS Detroit would have avoided the 60 Minutes simsub. CBS has the DH game this week. Phil/Bal is a national telecast so 60 minutes will have a 7:30ish start. Hope this explains things.

Re: Global Again Dumps Simsub Of 60 Minutes and Equalizer

When it comes to NFL simsub, Bell uses CTV and CTV2 to cover as many games as possible. In BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan, Seaattle Seahawk games get the SS treatment. Winnipeg always simsubs Minnesota Vikings games Probably because legendary coach Bud Grant had connections with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Kitchener, Toronto and most recently Ottawa receive simsubbed Buffalo Bills games. Montreal usually gets either NY Giant or New England Patriot games. Atlantic Canada usually receive New England Patriot games. TSN also carries additional games not available OTA.

Re: Global Again Dumps Simsub Of 60 Minutes and Equalizer

But Fox decided to air a sneak peek of Animal Control at 8PM while City TV decided to air Simpsons from the beginning. Once the sneak peek ended, City TV decided to sim sub as if there is no difference in programming, leaving out...oh, about...if lucky, 5% of the content of the show, which is perfectly legal.
However, viewers who chose to see the sneak peek shouldn't be punished with a forced sim sub cut in during the program, leaving anything out. It should be done during the ads.
That's how Global & others do it.

This is precisely why I subscribe to the Seattle network affilliates. With the exception of Award Shows plus SNF and MNF games, primetime is simsub free. Well worth the $3/month.

Re: Global Again Dumps Simsub Of 60 Minutes and Equalizer

I don't know about Rogers but again this week on Fibe TV 60 Minutes on Global is not simsubed with CBS.  The US network is 8 minutes behind.  Guess this likely means that Global will have no simsub for the rest of the evening again this week.
