Veteran Host Leaving CBC's "Fifth Estate" After More Than 30 Years

Bob McKeown has been plying his trade at the high profile CBC investigative show for 31 years. Now he's going out with a special retrospective and an impressive list of stories.

"The Fifth Estate: 50 Years Of Truth" will air on the network Nov. 29th.

Bob McKeown to retire from CBC’s ‘The Fifth Estate’

Bob has certainly had a great career.  I always remember his interview with right wing pundit Ann Coulter on the Fifth Estate years ago.  One of the few times she sort of backed down on a few points because she had her facts wrong and McKeown pointed this out to her.

That sounds like a special edition of the Fifth Estate that I will be watching.  Hope CBC promotes it, they don't promote this show that much.

Don't forget he was a Centre with the Ottawa Rough Rider when they won the Grey Cup in 1973.

I remember when stupid Anne Coulter insisted that Canada was in the Vietnam war.  She argued with McKeown.  She admitted she was wrong but later she said she had done more research and Canada was indeed in the Vietnam war, and she gloated that she was right.  Wat "research" she did she never specified -- but obviously she was still wrong.

I remember him starting out on CBC 1 in Ottawa in the 70's, he had talent for radio and he played Centre on the offensive line for the Rough Riders.

Talented man, great career. He even spent time on air in the U.S. too!

I'm certainly not one to defend Coulter, and I would agree that she was wrong to say that Canada was part of the Vietnam War. However, there were a significant number of Canadians who volunteered to serve in the US forces during the war, and I wonder if she might have conflated that with the idea that we were involved as a country.

CBC has now named Bob McKeown's replacement on The Fifth Estate. Her name is Ioanna Roumeliotis, and she's been on The National and CBC News Network for a while.

She starts as co-host on March 7th, with a report on online extremism.

Roumeliotis joins the show on its 50th anniversary on the air.

Possibly, or more likely she confused Canada with Australia, which did actually send troops to Vietnam. Nevertheless she was wrong in her claim that the Canadian military itself was deployed or that Canada supported the war. Pearson opposed it- I believe he even said so when he was speaking in the US and was dressed down by LBJ for it. And rather than admit she was wrong, Coulter doubled down when confronted with her mistake.

I mean there were a few Americans who volunteered with the SS or Wehrmacht during WW2 but that doesn't mean the United States supported Nazi Germany during the war.
