Since Corus launched 107.3 The Edge in Calgary as an Iconic Alternative format, and now Power 97 Winnipeg has launched the same format, could this format take over Edge Toronto? Well it seems possible. I keep looking to the recently played page on and it seems to me that there are a lot more older songs in the mix than ever before. Could a full flip to Iconic Alternative happen? My gut instinct says that it will happen, sooner rather than later. But I feel if Toronto is going to do it, I think they will go big with the change. Meaning there will be some specialty programming on the station. More shows over the weekend possibly, including some form of a classic club show.

Yes I checked the recently played and was surprised to see Payolas, Suzanne Vega and even Joan Jett! So it appears to be slowly easing int that direction, although the difference between Toronto and Calgary's Edge is Toronto is still playing some currents while Calgary isn't. With regard to "going big" and specialty programming, Edge 102 used to have all that but Corus cut all of that years ago. It appears that Indie 88 is going to be the one to do the specialty programming as they recently hired CFNY's Dani Elwell.

Wouldn't that potentially cut into Q107's audience, though?

Doubt it, long as they don't start playing Van Halen or Rush. There was a brief period I remember hearing Guns N' Roses and Metallica on Edge.

Metallica gets into the playlist at Buffalo's WEDG(the OTHER Edge)on occasion.

I was wondering why CFNY was playing some classics like Depeche Mode, Tears For Fears and David Bowie. But how will that compete against stations like Boom 97.3 and Q107?

Q & Edge are the same company, so there will be (clear) differences between stations.

They are basically following the lead of 89.1 MAX FM in Orillia. I have considered MAX to be a step above The Edge musically since they began broadcasting, if you are a fan of alternative rock. There was a station based in Peterborough playing classic alternative , maybe still is, I haven't been there for a couple of years.

I have never been a fan of Alternative Rock, so I will have zero interest in Classic Alternative Rock. But for those who do, enjoy!

Arkells on the mighty Q ? Whoa...I might start listening again. I've noticed the change in Indie 88's format to more retro alternative and more hits. Certainly not as indie as it used to be.

Although I haven't been a regular Y108 listener in a long time, a quick scan of their playlist looks like they might be incorporating a little more classic alternative into their mix, too.

Q has had the Arkells in rotation for a few years now although nothing too current. I don't believe they have anything from the 2020's in the mix yet.

Just playing anything past 2010 is pretty progressive for them. Mind you, they would score some Cancon points with that selection, along with Our Lady Peace. Good to see they are doing a refresh though.
