Another Blow To Corus

Hard to believe they're still hanging on with the stock now downgraded to "junk" status.

Corus credit and recovery rating downgraded

Re: Another Blow To Corus

So if Corus files for bankruptcy what happens to their Global TV network? The radio stations? and some of their specialty channels such as YTV, Treehouse, Cartoon Network, Bommerang and the Disney Channels that they still own under license from the Walt Disney Company? Sell YTV, Treehouse, Cartoon Network,  and Bommerang and shut down the Disney Channel (along with the French one), Disney Jr, Disney XD and ABC Spark channels like what they did to the Disney channels in Europe and Asia.

Re: Another Blow To Corus

I've seen it happen. Financial difficulties. File for bankruptcy. Emerge with most of the same ownership / people in charge and the debts taken care of. Class A (banks and lawyers etc) get paid. Class B debtors, including writers, get wiped off the slate.

Re: Another Blow To Corus

Corus did recently have a minor victory with The Daily Show.   Slice is now the Canadian home for the program. They have been promoting this recently on Global.

Which really means STACKtv is the new Canadian home for the Daily Show.

They are promoting STACK but Slice can be had as a stand alone.

When Canwest filed for bankruptcy, other than closing or selling off 4 of the E! stations, everything else operated as normal. Maybe a similar scenario might happen here.

Re: Another Blow To Corus

And, in another interesting twist, the Globe and Mail reports that Quebecor has expressed interest in purchasing Corus, but the struggling outlet has yet to respond to any overtures.

What? RIP Global, hello Sun TV 2.0?
GAWD! I hope not! Hopefully they learned their lesson the first time round. (Sun TV)
If Quebecor snatches up Corus I hope they
leave Global News alone, free to be without the Right wing dictatorship/agenda.

Re: Another Blow To Corus

Sounds like Corus isn't in a rush to discuss selling out to Quebecor.  They may file for bankruptcy, and as ED1 mentioned above Global and it's divisions have been through this once already with CanWest and came through pretty much in tact last time.

It is interesting that Quebecor has an interest in buying Corus.  The one competitor that Quebecor boss Pierre Peladeau dislikes more than Radio-Canada would be Bell Media.  Maybe the former separatist and now born again federalist would love to go up against Bell Media on a national basis.  Quebecor is working to be a national player in wireless telecommunications with the purchase and expansion of Freedom Mobile.

Quebecor is not in the radio business however, so if they make a play for Corus they may not be interested in the radio stations, or just spin them off if they had to purchase the radio outlets in a deal.

Re: Another Blow To Corus

Will they still continue to run all their Global ontario transmitters if something goes south?

It wouldn't be wise to un-bundle the radio stations.

Their potential future competitors in Bell and Rogers sell all their ads as a suite of offerings. Not being able to also do-so would leave them at a disadvantage,

Re: Another Blow To Corus

Perhaps.

But spinning off the stations accomplishes more than being worried about your buffet items.  Keeping radio only works with a great radio leader (which they could find)  More of the same has proven not to work well.

The reality is the majority of advertisers don't buy "all their stuff bundled up".

With it or without radio - Quebecor would have a healthy menu to sell.

The one thing Quebec based media does better is "show business".   It might be a refreshing change.

Sun TV was a very bad flop. I hope Quebecor stays away from politics if they ever get the chance to buy Corus.
