The Good Old Days Of WLS & WCFL Live Again This Weekend

As part of the annual Labour Day special on Rewoundradio.com, they'll be featuring seldom or never heard airchecks from the great days of Chicago Top 40 giants WLS and WCFL, both 50,000 watt powerhouse stations of the 60s and 70s that many here listened to at night. (Although I found CFRB was always in the way of Super CFL at 1000 AM!)

Among the blasts from the pasts that will rise again: Larry Lujack, Fred Winston, Bob Sirott, Kris Erik Stevens and of course former CFTR morning man John Records Landecker.

The "broadcast" begins online at 6 AM Saturday, goes all three days and even includes episodes of Chickenman and Animal Stories.

More info on the where and the when can be found here.

Re: The Good Old Days Of WLS & WCFL Live Again This Weekend

I remember when I was maybe 13, I had a small flat little transistor radio that I would put under my pillow and listen to WCFL at night in bed. I think the DJ's name was Larry O'Brien. Real fast talker , Dave Mickie sound . My family lived in a subdivision to the southwest of Trenton during that time. This would be around 1969-early 70's. I found an obit for Larry, he was born in Toronto , I can't paste it here , not sure why.

CFRB got in my way, too, for WCFL. But WLS was loud and clear in the evenings back in the late sixties, early seventies.

I worked a project in Chicago in the 90's. I called in and got to talk to John Landekker when he was morning drive at WJMK.

My first time listening to Rewound Radio... great tunes! Thanks for that. I'll be sure to be listening this weekend for the WLS/WCFL Extravaganza!!

Here's (yes, Toronto-born) Larry O'Brian...

Re: The Good Old Days Of WLS & WCFL Live Again This Weekend

I am a big big fan of Dick Biondi. Listened every nite when I was a teenager. Who knows? He may have had some influence on that Dave Mickie guy. Many years later we, along with a couple other DJs, were put into the R & R Hall of Fame together. Meaning - I got to spend almost a week with him in Cleveland. It was so wonderful. Can you imagine?

One night, that week - Joey Reynolds invited both Dick and I to join him for his all night show on WOR-FM New York. Joey was doing his show from the broadcast studios located in the very top tip of the pyramid of Rock Hall. Damn it was great. Imagine sitting next to Dick Biondi in front of a mic with Joey doing his thing.

Thanks mic'em for remembering.

David, have you ever penned a book of your memoirs ?  If not, maybe now is the time ? What a great read it would be !
