It Appears They Haven't Fully Fixed Those Emergency Alerts

One of those Emergency Alerts about a missing child just interrupted programming on the station I was listening to. Nothing wrong with that, but the entire thing was almost completely unintelligible.

This aired on every station in the city (it actually originated from police in Quebec and likely would have been on radio stations throughout Ontario) and I couldn't understood a word of it, past the phrase "Amber Alert."

I honestly thought they'd fixed this system. But this one was just a waste of airtime. And with a child's life potentially in danger, that's not good enough.

Re: It Appears They Haven't Fully Fixed Those Emergency Alerts

The alert was transmitted in Ontario as the suspect vehicle had ON plates and the SQ (provincial police in Quebec) had requested that the alert be broadcast here too. It could also be that whoever inputted the alert message didn't do so with the radio/TV end in mind. Regardless, the system's text-to-speech engine leaves a lot to be desired, esp. when social media sites like TikTok have better TTS output than a national public alerting system.

Wow, that's terrible.

While the text-to-speech system isn't great, the bigger problem is that they're *still* not writing a different version of the alerts for it. You'd think hearing "H-T-T-P-COLON-SLASH-SLASH" would be a one time thing that you get a laugh from and then immediately fix.

They need to use a different  TTS voice for the Alert Ready system. The current voice they use is annoying and I cannot stand it.

Uh yeah. In one ear and out the other with me.  POINTLESS!!!
Thankfully, the point is best made in text form on my phone or TV screen.
