How did the old commercial go?  You who Mabel... Black Label, Carling Black Label Beer.
As a kid that's the one I remember. And another: Wouldn't a Dow go good now.

State Trooper was a syndicated series filmed in Nevada that aired from 1956-59. It was originally developed to compete with Highway Patrol.

If I go to a bar on a hot day, I always ask for some unpopular brand. It's probably been in the fridge longer than the other brands. At a bar in St Marys, I once asked for a 50. The bar maid jokingly replied, "I'll have to see some ID, sir. I cant sell that to you unless you're at least seventy-five."

I love a bar maid who has a sense of humour.

My mom used to drink Ten Penny.

During my radio days during presents at the clubs (so so much free beer) we used to get a kick out of the Molson Export? bottle that has a quirky label, when the bottle is turned sideways the sailing ship turns into an armadillo. Many armadillos on the table was definitely a sign we'd had enough alcohol that night.

Fond memories and wishful drinking...

You are correct. It really does look like an armadillo. Unfortunately, that logo has long since been retired. I think Molson Stock Ale is the only brand that retains the similar logo design.

I think Red Cap was discontinued 1982ish after Carling/Okeefe negotiated a deal to begin brewing Miller in Canada.

It was, along with a few others because Miller was a big seller.   Adding Miller saw the end of a few familiar Canadian brands while Labatt adding Budweiser did the same to their lineup.    The most noticeable change being the Miller bottle shape which was the beginning of the end of the stubby!    It was a time of change, that's for sure.

I went on the Molson Coors site and it's interesting that they have smaller breweries that aren't well known.  Didn't know they had a boutique brewery at Granville Island that offers tours and makes their own Granville Island beer along with 16 other brands. Or a newer brewery in the Fraser Valley that makes 35 brands including the famous Old Style Pilsner that is big in Western Canada.  At this location and on line you can buy a Old Style Pilsner jacket, socks, toque or mitts..

Re: Summer Of 1989...When Black Label Beer Was Cool Again

Does anyone remember when the Big Brewers offered tours? Back when I was at McMaster in the early 1970's, the Commerce Society organized a tour of the Stock Exchange [about 20 minutes] and one of the Molson plant on Fleet Street. At that time, you actually were permitted on the plant floor. After the tour, you were escorted to the "Anchor Room" where you watched old HNIC playoff highlight films and were permitted to consume free copious quantities of Molson products over a two hour period. Carling had a similar setup but gave you three hours to sample their product. I never was able to tour the Labatt plant.

Speaking of Carlsberg, it would be interesting to see some ads with Carl Holman, the Danish spokesman for the beer for many years, Haven't seen any of those ads on YouTube.

Some other great lines from those Molson Golden ads. What's Fred doing at the bottom of the pool. The Australian Crawl? Must be. He's down under. Smooth dude trying to pick up attractive bikini clad female: What's your sign babe? Exit! as she walks away.
