Rogers Replaces Bell As Main Sponsor Of T.O. Int'l. Film Festival

This year, it will be Rogers' red instead of Bell's blue that will be prominent in the background at TIFF. One question: what does this mean for the Bell Lightbox theatre where many of the movie premieres are staged?

TIFF lands Rogers as new presenting sponsor after Bell's departure last year

Bell dropped their sponsorship of the Lightbox Theatre last year.

If Bell saw no desire to continue, why did Rogers pick it up??

Rogers would never pass up the opportunity to paint the town red.

Sponsorships are contracts for a specific number of years.  Bell chose not to renew.  Likely a cost saving.  Same as Air Canada not renewing naming rights for the Air Canada Centre.   Scotiabank was more than happy to have their name on the arena and home of the Leafs.

TIFF is the world's second largest film festival, so Rogers saw value in this for the company, and Toronto is Rogers hometown.

As a company they have been making some interesting and big moves this year.  I wonder if they will introduce an entertainment program or specials of their own at some point.  Something they could run on Bravo, even City.  They are the key sponsor of TIFF now and it would make sense for them to have a program or special programming to cover the festival and all the red carpets, rather than just reports on the news.

I agree, I think an entertainment brand and program would be a perfect fit for Rogers, especially since the end of ET Canada.

Adding strength to that point is a reminder (we already know) that Rogers now has Cheryl Hickey.

So, is it just the Tiff building now? Or what?
With Rogers only sponsoring the main film festival, and not year round events, that leaves the door open for someone else to sponsor the building and whatever year round events.

Yeah, this is very strange.
Do they just call it the Lightbox Theatre?
I don't think Rogers wants to sponsor the festival and advertise movies shown at the Bell Theatre.
Also Roger is doing this for just one year.
What about after that?
The BMW festival?
The WestJet festival?
What if the festival was showing really long movies?  The Depends Festival?

I believe it has been called the tiff Lightbox Theatre since Bell dropped out last year.  Bell's name was taken off of the building.  They had the naming rights of the theatre from 2006 until some point last year.

OK good.
With the official Bell name gone I guess they can do whatever they want.
So the Starbucks International Film Festival then.
