John Moore Confirms Two Weeks Of Tory

Love him or hate him, if you turn on CFRB for the next two weeks, you'll be hearing a different John in the air chair. Vacationing host John Moore confirmed at the end of his last show on Friday that John Tory will sit in his chair until he returns in two weeks.

I know there are people here who are not huge fans of the former mayor, so they may have to change their dial for the coming 10 weekdays. I actually liked Tory when he did afternoons at 1010 and there's no question he knows the inner workings of not only City Hall but Queen's Park, so he can speak knowledgably about controversies that might pop up at either one. It's one of the reasons I don't consider him the tune-out factors some others seem to.

If you're listening for talk, your alternatives are Greg Brady on AM640, Metro Morning on CBC Radio 1, Marc Patrone on Sauga960, and the out of town combos on 610 and 900. Which, if any, will you choose?

Gotta go with WHAM out of Rochester.

I love morning radio programming that is 50% ads and 30% of the show host sputtering and stammering filler words.

i am a MOR guy when it comes to John Tory. Don't love him nor do I hate him, but I lean towards the "like" category.

Re: John Moore Confirms Two Weeks Of Tory

I don't mind John but he does sound too much like a lawyer on air.  He is better when he is a little less formal.  He does have a sense of humour about himself which comes through from time to time.  Also like when he occasionally puts Jerry Agar in his place.

Re: John Moore Confirms Two Weeks Of Tory

Happened to catch some of John Moore's act this morn.
Yes, he's said he's going on two weeks vacation starting today, but while I was listening he went on and on about how "beyond excited" he is to head for Cape Cod.
He listed the luxurious activities he'll be involved in, and, did he say "how excited" he is about it.?
At one point he said something like, "don't get me wrong I love my job," but I'm so excited.
I know this sound a bit stupid, but in one place I worked we had a rule of etiquette.
Because we were a 24/7 workplace not everyone got weekends off and many people worked nights, overnights and early mornings.
I remember for a while we had one guy who through a stroke of luck almost always got weekends off.
And many of  his shifts were day hours to boot.
He would leave at six O'clock on a Friday and shout out to the room, "have a good weekend, everyone."
Many in the room were going to be working on the weekend on not too great hours.
When he left the room several people would swear and curse his name after he walked out the door.
I imagine there are a lot of people listening to Moore this morning who were not going on an "exciting" vacation today, but will be carrying on with their stressful jobs.
I can imagine some of them would not be so glad as Moore repeatedly told them how "excited" he was to be leaving them today.

A far cry from "Ontario's Authoritative News Voice", its a shame what CFRB has become.

Re: John Moore Confirms Two Weeks Of Tory

Next week, their entire morning is up in the air. Tory continues for Moore while Deb Hutton has been announced as subbing for Jerry Agar when he goes on vacation. Not yet clear who will be taking her place at 2, but last time Jim Richards was off, she did all four hours, so perhaps Richards will return the favour.

They're working overtime to make the station as unlistenable as possible.

It's at times like this I really miss the dogs days of summer topics The Stafford Show would cover with listeners.

Mission accomplished.

Re: John Moore Confirms Two Weeks Of Tory

Jerry Agar's spot will be in good hands with Deb Hutton.
She will just reinforce Agar's mantra -- unions bad -- unions bad --OOOOOMMM.
Heard her commenting on the state of business and economics recently.
Her assessment -- the ones to blame are "the unions."
Meanwhile in the broadcasting industry, radio and TV jobs continue to be decimated by corporations whose broadcasters are largely not unionized.

Re: John Moore Confirms Two Weeks Of Tory

A very weird moment on Toronto radio Wednesday. While John Tory was pontificating about bike lines on CFRB around 8:38 AM, at the exact same moment on AM640 was - John Tory, talking about why the city wouldn't be bidding for the Olympics.

Now admittedly, the latter clip was when Tory was mayor in 2016, but what an odd juxtaposition to have the same voice on two competing stations at the same time on the prominent morning shows.

640's Greg Brady must have understood the absurdity of the situation, coming back on and saying something like "Not sure who that voice was, but I do understand what he was saying."

Something that could only happen in Toronto radio.

Re: John Moore Confirms Two Weeks Of Tory

So nice of CFRB to give Tory this generous airtime to launder his political legacy.

Edit: for the dozens of listeners of his show.

Re: John Moore Confirms Two Weeks Of Tory

It's weird to hear the guy on against you on the same format given any time on your station.

But it isn't unprecedented. in fact, one of the greatest things I ever heard on radio involved something like this, but it was done for a laugh.

It was back in the mid-70s, when the legendary Dan Ingram was killing it in the afternoon drivetime ratings on WABC in New York, with also-ran WNBC trying hard to nip at his heels. This was in the radio era where you never, ever acknowledged that your competitor even existed.

It was a winter afternoon, just after 5 PM, so both stations were coming in here. At some point and for reasons never explained, NBC's afternoon guy, the late great Bob Vernon (aka "Vernon With A V") suddenly played the "Dan Ingram! 77 W-A-B-C!" jingle on air.

He then came back on and in a very deep but overly-affected announcer's voice, he intoned, "Dan Ingram is not here. Nor do we know where you can find him. Thank you." And then into an NBC jingle and a song.

I was stunned at first, then laughing out loud. I'd never heard anyone do that before and especially in what is arguably the #1 most competitive market in the world. It was so unusual, I stll remember it all these years later. But man, was it funny.

AM640's journey into the same territory wasn't amusing - it was just odd.

Re: John Moore Confirms Two Weeks Of Tory

There have been other moments when Toronto stations have talked about each other from years ago.

Gordon Sinclair in one of his many editorials was complaining how Canadian radio stations didn't play Canadian music.  This of course was prior to the regs.  Sinclair said the only station that he knew of that  regularly supported Canadian music was CHUM.  And he mention their call letters more than once in the editorial.

I remember hearing an aircheck of Jim Van Horne on CHUM commenting how mellow his music was.    He said he thought maybe he had Bill Deegans records by mistake.  Bill was on at the same time on CFRB.

Re: John Moore Confirms Two Weeks Of Tory

I'm sure this was mentioned before, but I think Ben Mulroney should have his own talk show.  I listened to him the other day and I thought he would be perfect!

Re: John Moore Confirms Two Weeks Of Tory

Outside of this weekend, you'll get another chance to hear him 5-days in a row. He's taking Alex Pierson's place while she's off for two weeks. I believe Adam Zivo takes over next week, with Mulroney the week after.

Re: John Moore Confirms Two Weeks Of Tory

I watched Global news to past couple of evenings and Antony Robart was with Tracy Tong.  I am wondering if this is a permanent position for him and where is Alan Carter??  Why let him go then and have a replacement?  Alan was very good.

It might be that Antony is cheaper than Alan was - simple economics. Or, Antony is rotating doing a multitude of duties and can do that on one salary.
