A great little story on one of the last commercial short wave stations left on the planet. In fact, it often brands itself The Planet, because WBCQ in Monticello, Maine is one of the few remaining such outlets still in operation anywhere in the world.
It's owned by maverick Allan Weiner, who also operates a local AM & FM station in the same space as its mighty tower tower. And what a tower it is - one of the only such transmitters that rotates so it can aim its signal anywhere. (You can see a pic of this unique set-up in the linked article.)
“The antenna consists of low- and high-band array antennas, positioned back to back, each equipped with a reflector screen, allowing WBCQ to access all shortwave frequency bands between 6 MHz and 26 MHz,” the Radio World article states. “At 500 kW with an ERP of 20 MW, it is one of the most powerful shortwave stations in the USA.”

That's one hell of an antenna!

I don't have a religious bone in my body. I'm a non-believer. But I often listen to some of the non-religious programs on WBCQ.

WBCQ's website says the station has a special on an hour of airtime to do or say almost anything, for just $30.
It's certainly a pretty eclectic schedule filled with a lot of weirdness.

Love all their analog gear, thanks for sharing RA!

You have mentioned in the past that you occasionally have difficulty receiving WIVB. This beast might solve that problem. Apparently it rotates. You might get Rochester and Erie too.

WBCQ is very close to the Maine/New Brunswick border and has an additional station at 94.7 featuring a country format. Only 147 km away also at 94.7 a new station just began broadcasting a few days ago near Fredericton NB. CIHN has a southern gospel music and christian country format. The new station is 250 watts. Attached map shows the two coverage areas of both stations at 94.7. More info. from DJSharke RadioWest.ca
