There are a plethora of days that have gone down in history. July 8, 1954 is one of them.
It was the night a disc jockey named Dewey Phillips was convinced to play a record on WHBQ Memphis for the first time. It was a song by an unknown artist and it sounded different than anything else on the radio back then. It had only been recorded a few days previous.
Neither the record nor the artist would stay unknown for long. The reaction was so great, Phillips was forced to play it over and over and over that night, due to unprecedented listener requests. The song was "That's All Right" and the singer was a guy with the strange name of Elvis Presley.
We all know what happened after that.

WHBQ has a sports talk format today. They don't show up in the Memphis Neilsen Ratings. Perhaps they are a non subscriber.

Sad to hear. They once were a pioneering radio station.
Maybe they should go back to playing Elvis!
