Is Anyone Watching Those 24/7 Online Toronto News Stations?

You've probably heard about all those 24 hour newsfeeds that networks and local stations are now running online.

City TV's is called "CityNews 24/7" and features live feeds of their newscasts and BT. The rest of the time appears to be endless repeats of stories they've previously run. But it's usually not live and consists of basically a rerun until the next live newscast comes along.

Global has its own feed, mostly using material from Global National.

CBC's version is available on Gem, although you have to sign in to see it. And CTV has a CP24 feed and CTV News Channel, but I haven't always been able to access either of them.

My questions: these extras can't be widely viewed and certainly there's no way it makes any financial sense to do it with a staff 24 hours a day, which is what it would take to do it properly. So is anyone actually watching these feeds? Have you ever tuned one of them in and watched for a measurable amount of time? Can they possibly be making any money on any of these feeds?

Don't get me wrong - I like the idea of a full time online local video news service. I'm just not sure if it's worth the trouble.

I put Global's on in the background from time to time as an alternative to CP24

Do you find it up to date or just repeats of older news?

CP24 is the only one I trust to be news as it happens. I am so glad it is there.

=12pxIt's kind of a mix. I think they have a set number of stories in the rotation and the oldest one gets pushed out when a new one is added.  If it's a busy news day, it feels current overall.

I have been in my share of waiting rooms over the years and by far the most popular service you see is CP24.  Like the old CityNews line, they are EVERYWHERE.  Also you see the channel in restaurants and bars, much more than the other news channels.

Re: Is Anyone Watching Those 24/7 Online Toronto News Stations?

I heard the Global ones are getting pretty strong numbers in terms of viewers (especially out west). CBC and CityNews must've gotten a similar response from their initial set of streaming news channels that they decided to expand them.

I highly doubt these channels are manned 24-7, especially overnights unless a crew is calling in for something earth shattering. They're also really not designed to be like CBC News Network or CTV News Channel where they're doing live breaking news all the time. They're just headline news services (with a live TV simulcast at the usual news times). If people can tune in for 30 minutes to catch up on the basics, that's probably the most the networks can ask for. This is also good for places outside of Toronto or Vancouver where there was never a CP24 or BC1 type of news channel for their region.

What surprises me is how Bell is just giving CP24 and CTV News Channel away for free on their website.

Agreed. Similar to how CHFI still rules in most Toronto area office buildings.

Was at a restaurant last week and they had the CityNews channel on a few of the TV's there. I glanced up 3 times before I realized it wasn't CP24.

It looks virtually identical in appearance. If I were Bell, I'd sue over such a similar layout and colour scheme.

CityNews is similar to CP/24 in appearance, but a cheap knockoff in content.
For instance they will cover a news conference that has a period of French Q and A but they don't have a translation service, so they just keep showing the news conference in French.
Of course, if you are bilingual this is fine.

CityNews's new red colour scheme is annoying. Most of their YouTube clips have a fading red line at the bottom which confuses people, especially me... as if I have already started watching those videos when I haven't watched any of them. Maybe that's the point.
