It's something I never thought I'd say - AM640's newsroom is now far better than Newstalk 1010's. The last few months have made it obvious. While both deliver the headlines, 640 actually has reporters that go out on stories and report back with voiceovers.(What a concept!) CFRB, to my knowledge, has none.
640 is better at integrating news clips extracted from their talk shows into their newscasts and that keeps them more up-to-date then their competition.
And after listening to both closely over the past few months, there's one other dividing line. CFRB relies way, way too much on excerpting stories from CTV Toronto's noon, 6 and 11:30 PM newscasts. The problem? They're often from the day before and played back, especially on the morning show. That makes them dated and it means they only have access to new updates three times a day. That's hardly a way to cover breaking or developing news. (I still can't figure out why they don't leverage CP24's more updated material more often.)
To be clear - neither beats 680 or even the CBC for updated news (although the latter tends to be more national than local.) But CFRB's newsroom was once the hallmark of the station. Not anymore. I never thought 640 would beat them in this department. But after months of monitoring this stuff, it appears they have. By a lot.

Where is the money coming from? 640 is owned by Corus, a company with crashing shares.
Meanwhile, Bell has the money and just won't spend it.

It's a modern day paradox! Soon, cats will be living with dogs!

Onterio's Authoratative News Voice. indeed. Gordon Sinclair and Jack Dennett must be rolling in their graves.

I don't really notice much difference in the news on either station.
I guess 640 does use more reporters, but that's from their Global TV pool.
CFRB seems to me to use more clips from their talk shows, more like promoting the hosts than anything else.
The newscaster always says something like, "And on Moore in The Morning, John Moore asked this question to the Education minister." The clip seems to promote Moore more than break any new ground by the minister etc.
And of course a lot of the news clips are from CTV or CP-24

Almost all of the voiceovers are taken directly from CTV Toronto's newscasts. The problem there is that if they take something from the noon newscast and play it at say, 4 PM, it's at least four hours old by that point and things could have changed in the interim. How would they know if they haven't got anybody there reporting?
I've also heard them do this - and this is even worse. Instead of taking an old reporter story, who at least went to the scene, they'll sometimes take the noon anchor reading a piece of copy and use that as their "reporter" VO. That's just cheesy.
I don't know. Maybe I'm just a bit of purist and this doesn't bother anyone else. But I think it's a poor way to run a newsroom, especially one that was once so prominent, although admittedly devastated by seemingly never-ending budget cuts.

The only reason to listen to 1010 anymore is Vassy. The rest is boring dreck. I don't even bother listening to any of Moore in the morning, for the first time since he took over from Uncle Ted.

As a former ND of 70's Toronto radio, it's a joke that CFRB can even say they have a newsroom. In order to promote yourself as an "authoritative" news source, you must have some and CTV ain't it! No reporters inside or on the outside. Their constant programming lineup changes become routine lacking any sign of professional input. This shell of its former self is a result of Bell's ownership, only confirmed by their basement ratings.

Given that the only time I see or hear references to 640 or 1010 are right here on Big Yellow, I'm amazed they bother to keep the lights on.
Other than RA and a few others round these parts, who is still listening? 😉

You're probably right but for better or worse, that's a lot of what I listen to because music just doesn't do it for me anymore. I need a little more content than that. (Although whether you'd call the talkers' offerings "content" is up to you.) So I only really feel confident venturing opinions on stations I actually hear.
That said, I welcome any posts about other radio outlets here. The problem, as I see it, is that nothing much different ever happens at CHUM-FM or CHFI, and their very consistency is what makes them so popular. But it also makes them fairly dull and predictable, and that may be why they so seldom make news here. But if anyone has anything to say about them, please feel free. I'd welcome the additions.

Good response, RA. I welcome your posts on the two stations that used to be part of my day. I'm just astonished at how far they have fallen.

Agreed. They could both be better, including CFRB which Bell has treated like a car rusting in garage that they never go out and start. No wonder it doesn't run properly. Even given the limitations of AM these days, a new owner that cares could surely do better.

Well they must have somebody besides me listening when I'm doing chores in my car.
When I hear their talk shows they have people who call in, no problem.
Granted most of them are right wing Trump supporters, and anti-Trudeau types, but they do call.
The snickering, overly verbose John Oakley also seems to soldier on at 640.
When I can't take the AM ranters any more I might tune to Boom FM.
Sometimes CBC.
