Shades Of O.J.! U.S. Networks Go Wild After Trump Found Guilty

Every single American network (except the local Buffalo Fox affiliate) has been taken over by live coverage of the verdict in the Donald Trump Hush Money Trial.

I couldn't help think as I was watching it of the OJ Simpson verdict so many decades ago, the last time a court case in the U.S. attracted so much attention. And there were other similairites - people on the street both pro and con alternately cheering or decrying the verdict. And then there was the helicopter shot of Trump's car leaving the courtroom and trying to navigate through Manhattan traffic - a different kind of slow speed chase!

I can only wonder if there will now be primetime specials and how long the cable stations, like CNN, Fox News and MSNBC, will go on and on and on about this. Of the Big 3 in Buffalo, only WGRZ stayed with NBC coverage instead of going to local news at 6.

There's no doubt it's a big story for the media and I strongly suspect it will take up a lot of airtime for the foreseeable future, with the networks potentially extending their evening news shows to devote more time to it.

The Canadian stations have all reported the story, but none of them are going whole hog on it or interrupting normal programming.

A moron orgy to rival the pool scene in Lars Von Trier's 'The Idiots'.

Great stuff if that's your bag, man.

EDIT: journalistic moron orgy

...and a well-known Ottawa broadcaster tonight was forced to deal with personal attacks over this event, from somebody who shares the same name and views as someone on this board, someone who has been told numerous times to keep partisan politics out of various non-political topics.

And then there's Allan Dershowitz, a once respected lawyer who began his downward slide as a defender of OJ Simpson and today calls the verdict of Trump a dark day for America.
He actually says in all his 60 years of legal experience he's never seen a verdict based on such flimsy evidence.
Really?
What went wrong with this guy?

Just keep partisan politics out of this, PLEASE!

Yes. I was commenting on this as a sort of a TV event, not as a political story. That's the context I was looking for. This was a historical moment in North America and the media reaction is part of that story.

While I completely agree with you that this isn't the place for that, this thread obviously never stood a chance to not go that way. For your own sake, just don't click, and RA will nuke it if need be.

Yes, I probably should have known it would go in that direction. But the networks' reaction was really historic and interesting. This is why we can't have nice things!

Not a reason to not post it. With your 'light touch' approach to moderation (which I fully support) it's going to happen.

The next big question is will Trump do any prison time. We will find out July 11th.

I expect the networks to go into overdrive on that day, just like they did on Thursday. The coverage is going to be insane.

If Trump isn't sentenced to some prison time, my prediction is the coverage will go something like this. FOXNews: All high-fives and monster smiles. The majority of the other prominent news media: Somber coverage with the basic tone of A Dark Day in America. July 11 is a Thursday, and unfortunately I work that day, so I won't get to witness the wall to wall coverage.

Re: Shades Of O.J.! U.S. Networks Go Wild After Trump Found Guilty

Yesterdays coverage was riveting.  On the news channels that I receive CNN was first with breaking news that a verdict had been reached at 4:38pm.  BBC World was next at 4:40.  CBC News Network at 4:41.

CTV News Channel was into their afternoon national newscast at 4:30 and I think it may have been taped since I didn't see anything on the verdict until 5pm when Vassey came on with Power Play. The story on the trial at 4:39 had no mention of a verdict and nothing later in the newscast.   CP24 had the story at about 4:50  but didn't dwell on it initially and went back to local news.

CBC News Network was the first to get the public's reaction right after the verdict came out.  Katie Simpson hiked around the court house to where a crowd was gathered and asked people their thoughts on the guilty verdict.

They were live on the air and Katie just went up to people.  It was different how she identified the network.  Twice she said "Katie Simpson from Canada's national public broadcaster, do you have any comment on the verdict just released.."  I thought it was odd that she didn't say CBC News, but there was noise in the background and I wondered if she thought somebody might have thought she said ABC or NBC News so she went with the more wordy Canada's national public broadcaster with no CBC call letters.

All of the Canadian news channels had US pundits on air with hosts soon after the guilty verdict came out.

Or it's possible that many Americans have never heard of the CBC, so it wouldn't mean a lot to them to hear her say those letters. It is amazing how little some U.S. residents know about their neighbours to the north. But perhaps your noise theory is correct.

Re: Shades Of O.J.! U.S. Networks Go Wild After Trump Found Guilty

Agreed, most New Yorkers won't be familiar with CBC.  I have seen CTV reporters give their name and say they are from Canadian news television when asking someone live for a comment if they are overseas or even in the US.  CBC also sounds like CBS if people can't hear clearly or just hear the first two letters. She literally was talking to people about a minute after the verdict came out, and she was first.
