Doug Ingle passed yesterday at age 78. No cause of death was given. He was the last surviving member of the group. He wrote, sang and played organ on their only top 40 hit, Inagaddadavida.

Sadly, The Simpsons riff is how most Gen-X and later generations know of I. Ron Butterfly's hymns.

Setting aside the single edit, would "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" qualify as the longest one-hit wonder? The full version runs 17:05.

I suppose technically, it is a one hit wonder peaking at #30 on the Hot 100. I don't think CHUM ever played it. It never charted and never made the hitbound portion of the chart.

Also a favorite of rock radio DJ's because it was one of the few "bathroom break" songs long enough where you didn't have to rush back to the booth.
RIP Doug Ingle

Some DJs were doing, ehm, "unusual" things in the bathroom. Good thing it had an exhaust fan.
(Looking at you, Marsbar)

It wasn't pot, but good old alcohol that fueled this hit.
The story is that Ingle was so drunk when he recorded it, that he just slurred all his words.
Rather than rerecord it while sober, the band just decided to let it go as it was.
Ntheresissistery.

mace says that Doug Ingle was the last surviving member. Well, Danny Weiss is still with us and living north of Toronto.

I should have said that a bit better. Ingle was the last "original' surviving member of the band. Looking at their history, I counted more than 50 musicians who were part of the band over many decades.

Happy to offer up my own clarification - I tend to use "one-hit wonder" in the sense of a band known for only one song, not necessarily chart performance.
