Jimmy Kimmel hosted the ABC Upfronts for the network and Disney a few days ago. The fall upfronts while not as big a deal as years ago, did/does have more importance this year because of the writers strike that decimated this past TV season. All the agencies, advertisers, movers/shakers in NY and LA pay attention to what the networks are offering up this fall season. And many were at the gala presentation in New York.
Kimmel spent a lot of time mocking and critical of ABC and Disney with all of the executives in the room. From brioux.tv..

Johnny Carson used to make fun of NBC

During my career as a Union Representatives, one of the most common things that got employees into trouble was absenteeism.
It seems now that Kimmel has as many rerun shows as he has originals. He's losing a lot of time off the job.

He may have negotiated that. Kimmel's made no secret of the fact that after 20 years (he's now the longest-running late night host) he's been thinking about leaving and while the show isn't number 1 it does consistently beat the Tonight Show for #2 and is a money maker for ABC. There also aren't any successors in the wings, at least none who wouldn't keep the show at #2. So I think Kimmel is in a good position to ask for more time off and isn't at risk taking shots at ABC. He has had guest hosts in the past - something we haven't seen much of in late night since the Carson days, so I'm surprised ABC prefers reruns to guest hosts.

He's obviously filthy rich so he has no fear at being cancelled.
But he also obviously has a team around him that backs him up.
Also I would not be surprised if he's been told behind the scenes that if he ever lost or quit his gig at ABC there is some great offer just waiting for him to say yes.
Also hasn't he also already been asked and has accepted hosting next year's Oscars?
I have always liked Kimmel because his humour to me is not just the jokes. He really believes in what he's joking about.

We used to watch Jimmy Fallon but we switched to Kimmel about a year ago. Fallon was getting too silly.
