The "Law & Order Toronto" Subtlety You Probably Missed: CanCon Music

I have to admit I didn't even think of this, and there's no reason most people would even notice. But apparently a lot of the incidental or background music used on City TV's "Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent" is deliberately chosen CanCon.

Not sure I'd call them "standouts" as the headline below implies, but I wonder how many people actually even think about the background soundtrack when they're watching a television procedural drama series.

Breaking down the standout musical moments on Law & Order Toronto

To notice, I'd have to watch. I do like the idea though. In my experience Canadian music is popular globally, we're just sick of it because it's force fed to us (and because what is force fed to us is very narrow in scope; Tom Sawyer, Courage, Life Is A Highway, etc.)

Both Flashpoint and Due South would occasionally use familiar and not so familiar Canadian songs in some of their episodes.  Sometimes the music was background other times quite prominent.   I notice the music in television dramas, and often wonder if the cut is something produced for the show or  was it already recorded and chosen because it fits the mood or scene.  Likely in many cases both.

Son of A Critch has also used a few cancon and non cancon songs in the segments featuring VOCM or scenes where the writer wants to confirm or highlight the era that the show takes place.

I've never paid attention to the music in L and O Toronto.
I guess it's OK they use all Cancon.
But as for that disclaimer in the beginning that the stories are not meant to depict any real life people or situations ... don't make me laugh.
So far they have done stories very obviously based on the Ontario bread scandal, the rampant Toronto auto thefts, the very obvious Gian Gomeshi/John Dillinger sex harassment cases and the high school hockey hazing scandal.
A couple of episodes I can't pin down to a real event are the one where Olivia Chow appears briefly.
It's about a serial killer who kills anyone who rejects his music compositions.
also the death of the cypto coin guy and the murder of a woman journalist.
Overall I'd say the show has improved a fair amount from the first few episodes.
But I still think it needs to bring in at least one really notable actor, like L an O shows in the US that have had wonderful stars over the years like Michael Moriarty, Sam Waterston, Mariska Hartigay even Ice T for that matter.
Maybe they just can't afford "big names."
Let alone Cancon names.

Other than the Tragically Hip, I have never heard of any of the other Canadian artists listed in the article. As for the music? Nothing but white noise to me.

They aren't using "all cancon" music for the show.
