Roku Snags Rights To MLB - & You Won't Need A Box To Watch Free

It's the latest chapter in streaming acquiring major league sports rights. This time, it's Sunday afternoon baseball, which will appear on Roku devices, including the app and its website. All of it is free and you don't have to sign up or login to see it.

The new arrangement starts this Sunday with a Red Sox/Cardinals game. It appears the local feed will be used for the webcast.

There's no word if any Jays contests will be included - or what happens to the Sportsnet broadcast scheduled for that day if they do.

Roku will stream weekly MLB game on Sundays. Viewers won’t need one of the service’s devices

Will this happen in Canada?

Not sure, but there was nothing in the AP article to indicate it wouldn't be seen here. Usually when they buy the rights to this kind of thing, a streamer purchases all of North America. Does Roku have the kind of set-up that could black something out in just one specific country? I'd be surprised if Canadians can't tune in. I guess we'll know for sure this Sunday.

Here is the schedule released by MLB today.  Jays are in Detroit on May 26th, so this will be on Roku.  Looks like this is the only Jays game this season on Roku, some other teams have two.  French sports network TVA Sports will have the game in addition to Roku.  Early time at 11:35.

Roku site does not work with a VPN set for Canada.

The link to the ROKU Channel in the article says that Roku isn't available in my region...until I turned on my VPN and connected to a U.S. server. 🙄  ...but I haven't figured out how to stream anything without a device.  The (official app) is not like Pluto or Plex; it just links to your device.

OK then, there's your answer. A VPN setting solves the issue. Now all they have to do is show a game you're interested in.
