WAMU is the top rated station in D.C. with a 12.7 share, miles ahead of #2, all news WTOP with an 8.3.

While I'm always sorry to read about layoffs, I must admit it's unique to see a broadcasting company ditch it's digital division to focus on radio, when it's usually the other way around.

Fitting that WAMU with it's public news/talk format and WTOP with all news would be the two top stations in a government town like Washington.

WAMU and WTOP look impressive from some other angles too.

Unlike many public news/talk stations whose impressive-looking 12+ numbers are built on a smaller cume of generally older but extremely loyal listeners, WAMU has a good cume, and is also #1 18-34, and #2 25-54.

As for WTOP, even though it's in market #8 and ranks around #9 25-54, it is often the highest billing radio station in the US. Its commercial breaks feature many spots aimed at a very small portion of its audience: elected officials.
