Flood Damages Part Of Radio Stn.'s Massive 96-Yr.Old Record Collection

It happened after water came cascading down from a broken pipe into the basement of CKUA Edmonton, which is the home of one of the most extensive radio station record collections in the country. They're trying now to save what they can. Some of the discs are irreplaceable.

"Many of those records would have been one-off. They might have been given to us by an artist hoping to get discovered on the radio by a distributor; there may not have ever been an actual pressing of those albums; they might have just been out there for demo."

Shouldn't the discs themselves be okay, just whatever paper and cardboard covers be lost? (Not that the covers and such are a small deal, but the music itself should survive, no?

if you watch the video, the station says it was mostly covers that were soaked and they're trying to save them. I think some of the vinyl was damaged as well and hopefully, they can be rescued, too. But it's mostly the sleeves that were flooded.

As the station rep says, they're valauble not just for historical reasons but because previous hosts made notes on them, with information about the artists and things they learned about the discs.

Those may well be irreplacable.

They'll really be in a tight spot when the record companies request the promo copies back.

The Central Alberta Telephone and Telegraph Corporation (Operatic Cylinders Division) is notorious for that.
