Why You Can't See "The Daily Show" On Free TV In Canada Anymore

The show, which used to star comedian Trevor Noah, always followed CTV's late Toronto News at 12:05 AM. But as of early December, it's gone. The question is why. According to Montreal columnist Steve Faguy, Bell Media isn't saying, other than to confirm it's dropped the show entirely. It had been running in that slot for several years.

Its replacement - what else? Yet another rerun of "The Big Bang Theory." (Is there any show in the world CTV uses more than this overplayed comedy, now in permanent syndication?)

According to Faguy's blog, Paramount+ has picked up the show in Canada, but it means if you're a fan, you'll now have to pay to see it.

That's an advantage that Canadian OTA networks sometimes have.  Scheduling a show that is on a pay channel everywhere else but free here.  This was the case for many years of the Daily Show when it was free on CTV.

Same as the Sopranos which ran unedited decades ago on CTV and is currently showing in CTV2.  Even on Saturday with the Buffalo-LA football game that caused an uproar since it was only available on Peacock in the US, but free on CTV2.  And since most people still have cable, no additional cost if watching on TSN.

Also interesting that Faguy mentioned that the CRTC considers prime time to be 6pm until midnight.  To me this makes much more sense than just 8 to 11pm which is too narrow a time frame and ignores that normally the highest rated regular programs on CBS, NBC and ABC are the 6:30 newscasts. Shouldn't that be considered prime time?

Even syndicated programming at 7 or 7:30 (Jeopardy, The Price Is Right) often outdraws anything offered 8-11pm during US network timeslots.  If it has more viewers total and in key demos, it should be considered prime time.

I wondered what happened.
All of a sudden one day...NO it was not Big Bang Theory.

The Seth Myers show replaced the Daily Show.

If I were clueless to the facts, I'd assume Seth Myers is the new host of the Daily Show.

Looks like it's on Paramount+ in Canada now (ie Prime add-on). Don't know if they picked it up because CTV dropped it or they outbid CTV for it.

Well hey, at least this opens up a spot for Mike Bullard to bring back Open Mike! (or maybe not)

It seems like CTV dropped it before Paramount+ made plans to pick it up. It was added to the streaming service about two weeks ago after CTV dropped it in October.
This also means that Canadians won’t be able to see it until the day after it airs in the US.

Interesting that Seth Myers is shown to air @ 12:35, but in the Toronto market he as been airing immediately after the 11:30 CTV Toronto newscast. (12:05)  https://www.ctv.ca/shows/late-night-with-seth-meyers

That's interesting.  I wonder how CTV gets the show early.  Traditionally the US late night talk shows aren't fed in advance.  That's why you see the US network bug on the Canadian channels that air US late night shows.

And Global has been showing Stephen Colbert half an hour later at 12:05 ever since ET Canada finished.  Jimmy Fallon gets run separately on CTV often on Mondays because of football.
