It's The Semi-Annual "How To Fix The Wrong Time On SOWNY" Post!

It happens every year. Or rather, twice a year – the semi-annual time switch can cause some here to see the wrong time displayed on the board, depending on a number of factors that, frankly, I could never quite figure out.

Some tell me everything’s fine. Others complain they’re now an hour out. And every six months I find myself posting the same message. So here goes.

The good news is the fix is, like your friendly neighbourhood moderator, very simple.

At the top of the page, if you're signed in, click on “My Options.” Below your username and email, you’ll find a section called “Timezone Preference.” On the drop down menu, adjust the time by an hour. (For example, Daylight Time can be altered to  -4 AST to get it to show the correct time. Standard Time goes back to -5.)

Go to the bottom of that page and hit “submit.”

That’s it. The clock should now display correctly. And just in time!

(Kudos to the Oldies Board for that last one!)

As long as my messages get posted, it really does not matter to me what time is displayed.

Nothing wrong with that. It will be right again in 6 months anyway!

Re: It's The Semi-Annual "How To Fix The Wrong Time On SOWNY" Post!

Funny, but I hadn't thought about this in years.

When I was working at CFTR, they'd just come out with affordable digital watches, and I had one. My news director at the time, Bob Holiday, noticed and asked me if they adjusted themselves for the coming time change. I doubted it, but had to admit I didn't really know, but I'd tell him when the big shift came.

I'd actually forgotten about it but he didn't. And so it was that at 5 AM the morning after the semi-annual clock change, my phone rang, waking me out of a deep sleep.

"It's Holiday," a deep voice intoned. "Did your watch change?"

I was still half asleep, "Wha--?" I groggily responded.

"Did your digital watch change with the shift to standard time?"

It was still dark outside, so I turned on the light and grabbed the watch off the night stand. "Nope," I told him, still not fully awake.

"OK, thanks." And he hung up.

Half an hour later, since I was already up, I turned on his first newscast. His kicker piece was how if you own one of those fancy-schmancy new digital watches, you had to adjust the time yourself. Because it wouldn't do it for you.

He got his answer, I lost the extra hour's sleep I'd just gained and I arrived at work - on time - at 9 AM. But it was one of those moments where a clock change cost me at least an hour's sleep in a way I never expected.
