Want To See Canadian TV Ratings? Only Place Is Three Down Nation..

As we all know the secret society known as Numeris has been hiding TV and radio ratings from the public for well over a year now.  Numeris you see is a clique run by Canadian broadcasters, ad agencies, and the Canadian Association of Broadcasters.

To help micro manage the information and spin, this group decided that they would no longer release ratings to the public. What thin gruel they were releasing weekly for TV was a week old.  But even that was too much information apparently.  Quarterly radio ratings?  Forget it.

It seems that the website Three Down Nation does release a little weekly rating information.  Mind you it is mostly about the CFL broadcasts and does include some for the NFL.

Maybe one of the newspapers groups will take out a Numeris membership and release ratings.  There is more interest than broadcasters want you to believe.  And why is it that when Bell gets some great numbers like the Canadian Open Golf final, or Canadian Grand Prix  the only place you see any data is in the BCE financial report. Why the big secret?

Dan Shulman said that Jays broadcast ratings were strong this past year and up over last year.  Great, where are the numbers?

Anyway here is what Three Down Nation posted about the CFL and NFL recently..

Also known as a business-to-business organization.

Makes the cozy arrangement sound even more sinister Aaron!  Why do other ratings services in other countries like the US, UK  Australia and New Zealand release ratings freely to the public and news organizations?  What makes Numeris so precious and special that nothing is released?  Why are broadcasters so hesitant to put out anything, even when they have some good news?  Bell will release numbers and crow about the Super Bowl, and not much else.

Just curious. That 1M+ number for the Sunday Night Dal/SF game. Is that just TSN, or does it include CTV2 plus the CTV2 simsub of NBC affilliates.

If you have some details about how ratings in those countries work, I'd love to hear it.

Here in Canada, the country in question, the ratings agency pays its bills by selling the ratings information. Giving it away for free is bad business.

I am sure you understand and know much better than I how Nielsen works.  I fail to see how Numeris releasing TV ratings that are one week old with 2+ numbers somehow will ruin their business. Same with the release of the ratings for radio with the 12+ data, which you always say is useless. This doesn't add up.

It's really all about control and trying to manage whatever little information that is put out.  Also why do the networks not even acknowledge when they have good ratings?  Aren't they supposedly in the marketing business?  They sure do a lousy job promoting themselves and their most popular programs.  CTV shows little effort running the same generic promos for months on all of their many stations, specialty channels and sports/news networks.

Because nobody believes any of it.

We all saw the duelling C TV/Global press releases in years past; they were never aimed at consumers but rather industry.

Every major Canadian radio market had two "#1 Hit Music Stations" for a while.

Quantitative marketing is no longer effective.

Aaron..please.  What a bunch of garbage.

Nobody believes it...nobody cares...it doesn't make any difference...the audience isn't interested....blah blah blah..

You solved the puzzle..."CTV/Global press releases years past were never aimed at consumers but rather the industry"  BINGO, we have a winner!!  Proving that broadcasters have no idea how to promote and market themselves to their audiences and customers.  Get out of the bubble and focus on the listener and viewer rather than trying to impress or play politics with competitors/friends/agencies in the industry.

Every major Canadian market had two #1 hit music stations for a while?   It is a marketing slogan.  In 1967 CKFH in Toronto said they were the second greatest radio station in Toronto, even the world.  Why?  Because all of the other stations claimed they were #1.  Another marketing slogan from 56 years ago.  Don't imagine many believed that one either.

But none of this means you don't promote strong ratings, popular programs and the acceptance by the audience.  In fact it is more important now than ever since as you mentioned revenue is still tight.

Promote and focus to the audience and your customers and good things happen.

That's a lot of words to agree that viewers and listeners are immune to quantitative marketing.

How is "look at how well we did" all about the audience?

Thankfully, Nielsen in the U.S. is not reluctant to release its figures. And they even do public studies like this one:

Sports viewing increased 360% on broadcast; streaming usage slips 1.7%

Sports gave broadcast channels a second straight month of viewing gains in September
