BBC Special On Famous Pedophile Disc Jockey Is Tragic But Fascinating

You may have never heard the name Jimmy Savile, but nearly everyone in Britain knows who he was. The broadcaster made his name during the British Invasion years in England, starting as a club DJ, graduating to an on-air position with Radio Luxembourg and eventually becoming truly famous by hosting the countdown show "Top of the Pops" on BBC TV.

He was friends with the top groups of that time, including the Beatles, and he eventually went on to do other shows on the Beeb, becoming one of the country's biggest stars and even getting the Order of the British Empire.

But he was something else no one knew about - a disgusting pedophile, who used his position of power and fame to hide his ugly acts on both young girls and boys. It was only after he died that the truth started coming out. And by then, it was too late to get justice. The scandal that followed rocked the staid old BBC to its core.

For the past few nights, the Beeb has presented a 4-part miniseries on the story called "The Reckoning," and if you have a VPN and can access their IPlayer, you can watch it for free. So far, I've seen the first two parts and they've been quite good. The concluding episodes air next week and will be online immediately afterwards.

It's a terrible story, but it's also radio related, although not in a good way. This guy lived his life in luxury until he died in 2011 at 84, never paying for ruining so many lives. Some of the victims, now all grown up but still clearly not over the trauma, are interviewed at the start of each episode, expressing their anger at how they were taken advantage of by this conscienceless wolf in sheep's clothing.

it's quite a story and if you're interested, the BBC IPlayer can be found here.

If you have issues with the VPN not working, as happens often at the BBC site, there's a less official way to watch it here. It's not for everyone. But it is a fascinating bit of history - broadcast and otherwise. And it's sadly all too true.

The BBC was part of the coverup while Savile was alive. The irony.

Oddly, the series is produced by ITV Studios but airing on BBC One.

The actor playing Savile, a guy named Steve Coogan, is amazing. He looks so much like him that when they occasionally cut to actual footage of the real guy at a charity appearance or concert footage, it's hard to tell them apart.

Here's a photograph of the paedophile with a psychopath.

Interestingly, Steve Coogan became known from Chris Morris' and Armando Iannucci's comedy stable with his 'Alan Partridge' character, on such shows as On the Hour, and The Day Today.

Also, Coogan voiced the Jimmy Savile puppet on Spitting Image. I was also really impressed by his Stan Laurel in Stan & Ollie.

Coogan was also responsible for sneaking terrorist propaganda onto the BBC. It's the funniest thing he's ever done.

Thanks for the link. Which VPN works with the BBC iPlayer? I used to have a Tunnelbear subscription but BBC kept blocking it so I gave up and haven't tried another one. Also, the iPlayer at one point required you to register with an UK address and  indication that you have paid your television license fees. Has that stopped? If not, how do you get around that?

I have watched the show suing the Yesmovies site provided above as an alternative but unfortunately they didn't have part 1 (or rather they had accidently uploaded part 2 as both part 1 and part 2). Is there any place I can find part 1 outside of BBC iPlayer?

The BBC iPlayer is a problem with VPNs. I'm not entirely sure what they're doing but all the caveats you mention are still in place. I have been able to get through to it sometimes, but it's a chore. Which is a shame, because there's a lot of good material there. I contacted my VPN provider and they weren't quite sure how to get by it, but they said they were looking into it. Which means nothing in the end.

As for part 1 being missing, I have no idea why. I saw it there just about a week ago. Here's an alternate, where I know it still is that's working:

Good luck!
