Rudy Blair spent 23 years at what was then 680 News and has since branched off on his own. In this interview with radio great Dave Charles, he looks back on those years, the stars he loved (and those he didn't) and where the future of entertainment in this city is going.
He also remembers the day reports began circulating about the death of Gordon Lightfoot, long before he actually passed away.
"Gordon and I became friends to the point I had his personal cell phone number. When it was reported by many primary news sources that Gordon had died in 2010, I was working then at 680 News and said, "If he died, someone would have contacted me." So I went on air saying his death was not confirmed, and I continued calling him. Finally, he called me after his office told him I was trying to reach him, and we put him on the air. Many people claim to have gotten him 1st; I did, and if not, if not I was at least 2nd."

I'd be interested to know why he thinks "the actors will not win" in the current SAG-AFTRA strike south of the border. On what does he base his prediction?

Actually, I wondered about that, too, but the reasons were not contained in the piece, if the question was asked at all.
I actually think the actors have a good chance of winning or at least making gains and I hope they do.

I hope the actors get what they are asking for as well. RA posted some photos of Mariska Hargitay and Chistopher Meloni when they started their careers on two quickly cancelled 1995 series. Fortunately, for them, both were able to land roles in long running successful series which made them extremely wealthy. The majority of viewers look at actors through the same lens that all of them are wealthy from the roles they portray. Unfortunately, the Hargitays of the world are the exception, not the rule. The majority of series are gone after one season leaving all those actors hoping to land a guest role or two on an established series. Even stars on successful series aren't safe. Last year all the actors on Bob "heart" Abishola with the exception of the two leads, were put on recurring status which meant far fewer episode appearances and less pay.

Speaking of which, the answer to the question below depends a lot on what happens with the actors' union in the next few weeks.
When Will Broadcast Hits Return?

As one actor pointed out, in a good year she might make five appearances as a supporting character on a long-running show like CSI, NCIS, Law and Order, or maybe a comedy like Neighbors. Her non-actors friends say "wow, we sure saw you a lot, you must be having a great year." However, she points out that at $5,000 a pop for each appearance, she still doesn't make enough money to qualify for health insurance under SAG-AFRTA rules, while the networks get to rerun the episodes indefinitely.
