Bell & Rogers Finding Live Sports Not The Cash Cow It Once Was

The Globe and Mail highlights that, while still a sure moneymaker, securing the rights to ever more expensive sporting events for TSN and Sportsnet is increasingly costing Bell and Rogers - and eventually you - a lot of money.

And there's no sign it will ever go down. But paradoxically, while they hate to pay more, they also can't afford to stop.

"Bell and Rogers will keep bidding for broadcast rights, keep increasing monthly subscriber fees for TSN and Sportsnet, and keep chopping costs."

Sports broadcasters under pressure to cut costs despite rising revenue

If Rogers needs more revenue, whatever happened to the idea of someone else out there paying Rogers for the naming rights to the Rogers Centre?

Both Sportsnet and TSN and their various channels are good sports services.  Of the two TSN has more variety but Sportsnet has locked up NHL hockey and the Jays.

Every sports network in the world is going through the same thing financially that these two are, so not unique to TSN or Sportsnet.

One thing that was interesting about the story was the fact that Bell Media took in $3.3 billion in revenue last year and Rogers Media $2.3 billion.  This should put to rest the whining from some media columnists and others about CBC's "huge advantage".  CBC/Radio Canada had total revenues last year of about $1.7 billion.  The "huge advantage" doesn't appear to be with the public broadcaster.

Speaking of naming rights, there are only two NHL arenas with no Corporate sponsor. Madison Square Gardens [named after Madison Square Park which was named after President James Madison] and Nassau County Coliseum. Only two NFL stadiums without naming rights. Green Bay's Lambeau Field and Chicago's Soldier Field. Nine MLB stadiums have no corporate names attached. Dodger, Fenway, Wrigley, Yankee, Angel, Oakland Coliseum, Camden Yards [Baltimore] Kauffman [KC] Nationals Park [DC]
