Music Only For A Woman: The Birth Of Easy Listening

I find some of the conclusions drawn in this story a bit sexist and ultimately specious. But see what you think.

To me he is describing the "Beautiful Music" format which could be heard on 98.1, 95.3, 94.9, 105.3, 106.1, and 96.1 back when I was growing up. We kids had another name for it. Elevator Music.

I still have PTSD from having to listen to CKQT.

As I've previously stated, Devil Music for lithium-addled housewives.

I always took the term Easy Listening as being geared for the 55+ crowd back in the 70's and 80's.  Not specifically women.

This format had more vocals and less instrumental cuts than Beautiful Music.  Easy Listening would include pop hits and mellower cover versions of songs that could have been in the top 40.  Feature artists like James Last, Engelbert Humperdinck, The Sandpipers, Herb Alpert, Anne Murray etc.

Re: Music Only For A Woman: The Birth Of Easy Listening

I very much used to enjoy the "Always quiet and beautiful" format of CKQT.
Then one day they decided to switch to "Easy favourites", which still seemed to be okay,
but the quieter the station the better.
I very much enjoy hearing instrumentals and thinking to myself "Hey? I know the words to that song..."
I MISS CKQT
and I wish it could come back...somewhere on the radio dial in Toronto, or an area easy for the Toronto dial to pick up.

(Yes, I know I also like rock music and other forms of music, but that's not the point)

It's just not the same without an Eddie Luther sounding voice inbetween songs, live and local...
It also doesn't seem to be as (slightly more) upbeat as CKQT was.

Re: Music Only For A Woman: The Birth Of Easy Listening

One of my early radio gigs was working for CKDA and CFMS in Victoria.
Back then we literally did that old comedy routine of giving the news in super hype voice for CKDA which was a top 40 rocker, then giving the "candle light and wine" version for CFMS which was an easy listening station owned by the same company.
All the jocks at CFMS were older men with super deep pipes and a velvet smooth delivery.
But the candle light and wine format was very popular in Victoria and in Vancouver the station CHQM FM also offered it.
When I came to Toronto CHFI was still doing it.
There were few live DJs because the announcers  sound tracked their shows and their voices were played by operators.
