I'm hearing it more and more often this year and earlier than ever - a back-to-school ad for Amazon.ca, urging parents to buy all the stuff at the online retailer their kids will grow out of in a single season. I went to the dollar store this morning and saw back-to-school material prominently on display, taking up an entire aisle. (I wonder how much those same retailers lost when kids were kept home during the pandemic?)
I guess summer is almost officially over but it feels like we barely had it! When do the CNE ads start?

I hated school when I was a kid and I hated the back to school ads.
On Labour Day weekend I used to almost feel ill.
Today, all these years later, I still hate to hear the back to school ads and on Labour Day weekend I feel depressed in sympathy with the kids.

It's funny how you never quite get over that dread of summer ending and school beginning. All these years later, I still get that awful feeling at the end of Labour Day weekend, too.

For me, the Jerry Lewis telethon was the death knell in the coffin of summer officially coming to an end.
Yeah, I hated school too.

For me the CNE is the giant end of summer buzz kill.

I just heard it - the very first ad for the CNE.

Goodbye summer. We hardly knew you. (And could we get at least a few days in a row without rain somewhere in the forecast before you go?)

I heard my first Back to School ad on July 2nd!! It was for Staples. My favourite is the "Most Wonderful Time of the Year" commercial. When ever I hear Andy Williams start singing that tune, I think of school more than Christmas now.

Canadian Tire did the right thing this week. Their weekly flyer doesn't mention Back to School. It just says "Back to it."
