Caught this on 680 yesterday afternoon and it's been bugging me since. At the end of a traffic/weather update the weather reporter launched into a 'Sunset Report', noting that the sun will set at 8:40. OK. Weird, but OK. Then the 'report' pivoted directly into marketing copy for some candy brand. What kind of fuckery is this?
Whoever signed off on this slimy ad push should be dismissed.

Radio will sponsor anything! Just ask those in the [insert sponsor name here] broadcast booth during the Jays' radio games.
Having said that, I do know that sunset times play a role in a couple of major religions. Sundown matters in Judaism, primarly on Friday nights when observant Jews have to light Sabbath candles before the sun goes down. I believe there are certain times Muslims also have to keep track of the sunsets.
But they don't need to know that every day of the week, although I suppose there's no real harm done. Still, this does seem a bit extreme and hopefully, the sun sets on it sooner than later!

Reese's Peanut Butter Cups is running a campaign right now that features the sunset as a time to eat one of their delicious confections. (see below).
However, this pales in comparison to others in a similar vein, such as the Dog Walking Forecast (Global), the School Bus Forecast and the Bass Fishing Forecast (both TWN).

Doesn't sunset also relate to the time they switch to their nightime pattern?
In Florida the TV weather always gives the sunset time. On Clearwater Beach the goofy tourists go out onto the pier every night to applaud the sunset.

On one hand, it is 680 News. I should just expect dumb crap like this. On the other hand, they are allowed to broadcast on the condition that they perform a service. I'd very much like that service to be free from such base adulteration.

Unsurprisingly, the same campaign is running on BreakfastTelevision.

To me, the sunset times would be of far greater interest than last weekend's movie box office statistics.

In my day sunset was when you'd have to stop playing outdoors and come inside. Doubt a lot of kids listen to 680 - or are allowed out to play these days.

Sundown, you'd better take care.

So I finally heard this thing on 680. It's a pretty silly tie-in with Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. You take a pic of a sunset in their Instagram "scanner" and if the orange in the shot matches the orange of the candy, you get entered into a contest to win $1,000 in groceries. They had BT in on this thing, too, so expect it to be pretty shortlived.
Pretty dumb contest, but it shows you Rogers will accept any advertising if it pays enough. It's one thing if they can show you on screen. But it just sounds silly in a few second promo on the radio.
