I just watched Sunday's "Question Period" on CTV and my admiration for Vassy Kapelos just keeps rising.
She had on two Liberal reps. and a Conservative and she nailed all three of them to the wall in the first half hour, pointing out their contradictions and - I hate to use the term - outright bullshit as they tried to deflect blame and use their talking points to weasel out of tough questions.
She wasn't having any of it, responding immediately with points that showed they were incorrect or at least bending the truth, and demanding to know how they responded when presented with the facts. And she repeatedly called them out for "not answering the question," a skill every single politician seems to be expertly trained in.
Good for her and I hope she keeps it up. It's nice to see a reporter who doesn't let these guys, regardless of party, get away with spin and half-truths. What a refreshing change from the usual polite Q&As on Canadian TV.
Evan who?

I have worked with Vassy, Evan and Rosemary.
I didn't see today's show, but assume she was channelling Rosie a la Chris Alexander.
The potential problem with being too persistent in holding those people to account is eventually, the parties might stop responding to your requests for guests. Crazy game politics is.

I've actually thought about that and whether it limits future guest bookings. But she's quite respectful while she's grilling them, and of course, they keep their frozen-on phony smiles and just pivot to something else. But she gets the point made.
Seems like all too often, the Ottawa press corps just accepts whatever a politician says and then moves on. She doesn't let them get away with it. I find that refreshing.

That's her style and she is the same everyday on Power Play on CTV News Channel. However as RA pointed out she is always respectful and I have noticed that it never turns into a shouting match or argumentative between her and a guest. In fact she often let's them finish and then responds with a "that's not what I asked you.." or "so you don't want to answer the question.."
Unlike too many other interviewers she doesn't editorialize or grandstand. She sticks to the facts.
She did the same on CBC and seemed to be equally pointed with Conservatives, Liberals and NDP. She knows not to end interviews on a negative note. I enjoy her on radio, more of her humour comes through and she is becoming more personable.
It was interesting when she moved to Power Play on CTV News Channel. For the first couple of weeks, any guest from all the parties always congratulated her on the new job and wished her all the best. So she is very much respected by her guests. She can be tough but she comes across as fair.

Yeah, because all politicians are genuinely sincere.

That can't be true. Surely she was a Liberal shill when she was at the CBC, because as many people have said here many times, the CBC is leftist propaganda. I'm sure Vassy was excellent on Global, then completely pro-Liberal while at the CBC, because they never would have let her anchor their most prominent pollical show if she didn't tow the Liberal line, and then she immediately regained her integrity the instant she moved to CTV. That has to be it. Defund the CBC!

Probably not. Both ask good questions that challenge the interviewee but Vassy is likable on air. Rosie is not.

Good luck with that.

Why do you people have to politicize everything? I'm tired of hearing about the Liberals. Just stop, please.

How is this "about Liberals"?
It's about RA praising Vassy's interviewing chops.

If you'll notice, my original comment made mention of how she's critical of both of the two major parties. I was very careful not to be partisan. The only reason I didn't mention the NDP is that, on the show I was referring to, she did not interview a rep from them. That said, I'm quite sure she would have grilled them, as well.
She's an equal opportunity truth seeker and that's what I like about her.
I well remember the late great Niagara Falls/St. Catharines talk show host John Michael. He'd rarely have a politician on his show, because he knew it was a waste of his listeners' airtime. He'd often explain on air when asked that it wasn't worth the expense, because whenever a political type came into the studio, it cost too much to get the place fumigated after they left!

Ah yes, John Michael. Let us not forget his greatest hit:

Yes, I seem to recall he was in trouble constantly over this issue. But that doesn't negate the fact that he was a talented talk show host. I was never entirely sure why he got so hung up on this but it became something of a cause celebre for him. He was most certainly in the wrong and he should have never even have brought it up. But that simply was not his style.
He definitely would not have survived it now.

The problem with Michael and others such as Lowell Green in Ottawa and Rafe Mair in B.C. was that they were personally offended and hurt when people would legitimately criticize their bombastic approach. Michael himself always insisted his routine was a schtick that he developed to get and keep listeners. As well, all three of these gentlemen stayed on the air long past their "best before" dates.
