Jerry Agar Says Cancon Put CKLW Out Of Business

I know many on here are sick of talking about this 52 year old ruling for radio, and so am I.  However on Jerry Agar's show one of the topics on Friday was about cancon in the movie industry and Jerry went on a bit of a rant about CKLW.

He said again (and wrongly) that it was cancon that took CKLW from being the most dominate radio station in North America to putting them out of business.

A bit of an exaggeration and not true.  Jerry made it sound like the moment LW started to play cancon that the station's ratings tanked.  CKLW was the dominate station in Detroit and a few other cities like Toledo for years after cancon was brought in 1971.

In fact one year after the introduction of the regulation by the CRTC, CKLW ratings had gone up 20% and the station enjoyed their best numbers for years after 1971.

Similar to many US AM top 40 stations it was FM that started the ratings to slide in the late 70's and early 80's.  CKLW's softening in popularity was due mostly to listeners switching to FM and also the fact that the station was beginning to sound somewhat dated in their approach.

Many of the big AM top 40 stations in America had the same shift in listeners.  WLS, WABC, WNBC, KHJ,  WKBW, KFRC and many others were all overwhelmed by FM at the same time as CKLW.  Since the same thing happened to these stations, it clearly wasn't cancon that put LW "out of business."  Besides CKLW AM lives on today as the number one station in Windsor and Essex county.

Herr Agar, again, does not know what he's talking about. It should be a crippling embarrassment to CFRB, but here we are.

That has to be the most meaningless #1 in the country.

Yeah, FM killed CKLW-AM, not Cancon, but government regulation did keep 'LW from making their own successful transition to FM

P1: You should have phoned in and challenged Jerry.

If anybody challenges Agar he usually flies into a snit and tells people they weren't listening to what he was saying etc.
Then he rephrases what he said to squirm out of being wrong or uninformed.

Maybe that's what Jerry wanted.    It wouldn't be the first time I've heard a talk radio host spout a stupid opinion or an outright lie just to troll for some calls on a slow day.    Stopped listening to Agar years ago.

I suppose Agar could have remained in Canada, during his entire career, thereby doing his bit to help on the Canadian content file. ;-)

I would have but they didn't give out the phone number and didn't have any callers for the segment.  Also I was in the car and was going to an appointment.  The segment was really about cancon in the movie industry and what counts and doesn't count.  Richard Crouse was the guest and Jerry brought up about CKLW.  Didn't sound like Richard knew much about CKLW and he didn't comment at all about what Jerry said.  Then they went back to the movie talk and the bit was over and I had to get to my appointment.  The segment was still on the 1010 website this morning, but I don't know how long they keep these on.
