Millions Of Americans Pay For Fox News Even If They Don't Want It

If you have cable or satellite TV in the US, you are probably paying for Fox News Channel whether you want it or not.
Fox News Channel is a must carry service on most cable and satellite companies in the US and charge each subscriber about $2 per month. You have no option of cancelling the channel and whether you watch or not doesn't matter.

In fact Fox as a broadcaster brings in more money per year from cable and satellite carriage fees than it does from advertising.  More details from the Los Angeles Times...https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2023-04-17/hate-fox-news-too-bad-you-still-have-to-pay-for-it

I'm pro-CBC, but you're really setting yourself up here.

Don't see why, just passing along the LA Times story.

$2.00/month in carriage fees? That is cheap compared to what non-sports fans have to pay for ESPN is also on basic cable in the U.S. Back in 2011, cable companies were paying $4.69 per subscriber. In 2017, that fee had risen to $7.21. By 2020, the fee was up to $7.64. Other 2020 fees by comparison. TNT-$2.20, NFL Network-$1.79, FNC-$1.72, USA-$1.65, CNN-$1.01. The U.S. network fees ABC-$1.29, FOX-$1.39, NBC-$1.40, CBS-$1.59.

The number of Americans currently using "illegal" IPTV services is also on the rise now in protest of high cable bills.

On the legal side, if SLING is collecting that $2 fee, it's not noticable to the customer. Rates are very low.

ESPN has ALWAYS been a huge culprit in raising prices. I remember in the old 4DTV days of C-Band satellite, ESPN's demands for more money from subscribers never seemed to end. They blamed escalating rights for the increases, but it happened so often, that I believe the real reason was simply greed.

One of the great things about C-Band was you could just pay for what you wanted, a true a-la-carte service. So if you just wanted HBO and Showtime, but not Disney or ESPN, you could do that. Those truly were the good old days of cable, when it still worked in the consumer's favour.

Re: Millions Of Americans Pay For Fox News Even If They Don't Want It

Fox News Channel commands a higher rate than the other cable news outlets like CNN and MSNBC.  However their carriage rates are about to go into negotiations with the cable and satellite companies.  Speculation is both carriers are going to be demanding lower rates from Fox. Some have said they will pull the service if the $2 charge isn't lowered. Fox News Channel has lost a lot of top advertisers.  I saw one ad on the weekend that wasn't even in HD and had the two black bars on either side of the screen.

Interesting in the article that states that Fox through all of their various channels and even the main network takes in more money from carriage fees than actual advertising.  Is this true for other networks like CBS and NBC?
