Hell Has Frozen Over! NP Runs Comment Piece- CBC Should Be Reformed!!

Opinion article in today's National Post says that CBC should be reformed and made into a service that Canadians would be proud of rather than just shut down or defunded.  Culture and CBC may be more important than some politicians think according to the writer..https://nationalpost.com/opinion/conservatives-should-reform-rather-than-defund-the-cbc

A thought-provoking alternate view comes from a former vice-chair of the CRTC, Peter Menzies. In addition to presenting existing polls about the public's attitude on defunding the CBC, he posits it could possibly result in two not-so-acceptable changes: ads on CBC Radio to make up for lost funding and a TV licence fee for Canadians, mimicking the levy in the U.K. that helps fuel the BBC.

The CBC debate won’t die until we try something different

Commercials on CBC Radio One? I have no problem with that. Aren't they the top rated station in most major Canadian markets? Advertisers would be pleased. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why CBC television viewers have disappeared. They don't like the programming being produced by the Mother Corporation. As for whether their news coverage has a left wing bias that is certainly debatable. However, as long as viewers perceive a bias exists, CBC newscasts will continue to be at or near the bottom of the ratings in most markets.

When the first radio commercial aired in 1922 it was a mistake. It would be a mistake now.

CBC radio went commercial free in 1974.  They already had no ads on news and public affairs programming and this was making up most of the schedule, so they decided to drop the remaining ads.

CBC radio two did experiment with ads back in 2013 for a few years with limited advertising availabilities.  More details from the Toronto Star...https://www.thestar.com/business/tech_news/2013/10/01/cbc_wades_gently_into_onair_commercials.html

There is a time when CBC Radio is forced to air commercials. It's during an election (I think it's just federal but it could be provincial, as well.) The law makes an exception for candidate or party ads and as odd it sounds, whenever there's an election period, Radio 1 must take their advertising.

And a lot of the election advertising is in areas where CBC radio is the only local radio or outlet available in remote areas of the country.

Catherine Tait has every right to defend CBC and to point out that many of the accusations are coming from the leader of the opposition.  If she said nothing, eventually some would say that the CBC won't even defend themselves.  Can't have it both ways kids.

The conservative leader should give us examples of the "typical CBC bias" he speaks of.

His odd comment of bias from the CBC reporter in the news conference clip was not accurate.  Asking the leader of the opposition a question on the conclusions of the report that determined the government was justified in using the Emergency Act is not bias.  The leader didn't like the results of the report, but a reporter asking a question on these results or if the conservative leader accepts them is hardly one sided.

The leader like all tories makes some good points and likely has worthwhile ideas.  Why he would hitch his wagon on this non starter subject with CBC is beyond me.  He is dividing the country exactly the same way he says the PM is doing, but his way could be even worse.

In the end this will bite him in the ass, just as we see what is happening to the south with a network (FOX) and a political party (GOP) that have gotten themselves into a big mess. They got into this mess because of lies, bias and creating division.   These two bitter and angry entities are now travelling down the road, that will end up leading ultimately to nowhere.

Many Canadians are likely tired of the Liberals and would change their vote. However the Conservative leader needs to offer real alternatives and ideas and not just copy divisive negative politics and the angry style imported from south of the border.  Cutting or defunding the CBC might be the start of placing the conservatives on this lonely long road that will take them nowhere.

P1: I agree with you that Defunding the CBC is not an issue which will win an election for the Conservative Party. Canadians are far more concerned about the cost of groceries to feed their families and the continued rise of violent crime being committed across the country. Focusing on these two issues will give them a much better shot at defeating the Liberals in the next election than whining about how many taxpayer dollars are sent to the CBC.
