Re: post a cool rock music radio station you listen to

of late I have not streamed much radio at all but over the years I have tried many triple A stations and was quite a regular listener of WXRT from Chicago.  Over-all I still rate it as the best triple A station in a major market.

In the last year I think I have only streamed Album Rock 540 The Goat because of my interest in AM stereo. They broadcast in AM stereo and so what I have done on a few occasions is steam them via my AM stereo transmitter and record that on reel to reel tape.

The playlist of the Goat is a throw back to the days of progressive radio in the 1970's. They are possibly the only commercial station where you might hear groups like Mandrake Memorial or Lothar and the Hand People. I was happy a few months ago when they played a track off Poco's first album.

This description of the station on their home page sums up the format:

and speaking of Mandrake Memorial the first time I remember actually hearing them was on this air check of WMMR in Philadelpha from 1972: You can stream this and many other cool air checks of the station at this site and the playlist below is from just one of many air checks at the site.

Might I suggest KOZT "The Coast" in Ft. Bragg, Ca. The station is owned by California Radio Partners and has a wide and varied playlist. VPN not required.

As the OP didn't specify OTA or streaming, I will chime in for MAX FM 89.1 out of Orillia. Although mainly an alternative rocker, they play enough classics that I find it a good mix. Obviously, you won't hear Led Zepplin etc on their station  but Rock 95 from Barrie does if so inclined to hear the same 100 songs played over and over. Also MAX plays local artists several times a day which is a refreshing change in my opinion.

I don't listen too much but I like The Bruce in Port Elgin.  Small market radio that plays active rock and regularly features local artists in the mix. In the summer they produced a live broadcast from Sauble Beach  featuring regional and local bands.  About a year ago the station raised $300,000 for CT scanner for the Southampton Saugeen Shores Hospital in a six hour radiothon.  They are going to do it all over again in a few weeks.

Listening this morning The Bruce has lots of ads and seems to have been accepted well by the local population and advertisers.  The format has been on CFPS and their Tobermory rebroadcaster for 18 months.  https://www.rockthebruce.ca/music/

If you're a fan of WOWO, you might be interested in their 6-part audio history, which can be found here. It features the story and audio excerpts from the station's 90+ years on the air.

Re: post a cool rock music radio station you listen to

Regarding KOZT. I have mentioned before that I used to listen to it sometimes as much as 20 years ago or more. I recently dug out a tape I had recorded of the station b/c I was thinking of adding some triple A stations to the web site as they are the closest  thing on commercial radio to the old progressive rock format. Only problem with that KOZT air check. The announcer did not say their name at all and I can't honestly tell if they are male or female. I have a few other recordings of them and will eventually get around to reviewing them.

Also regarding those WMMR air checks and playlist I posted earlier. The track by Billy Joel is a very early one and well before his breakthrough. He may not have been played on CHUM FM at the time. The first time I recall hearing Joel on CHUM FM was the song Captain Jack.

Also as a very regular listener to CHUM FM I can tell you that I never heard any Springsteen until  Born to Run but I did hear tracks from his first two albums on Buffalo radio. Never heard the NY Dolls or the first 10 CC ( the one with Rubber Bullets') on any area radio station until CFNY came along. Power Pop was mostly ignored on Progressive radio until the late 70's and so no Raspberries or Big Star and others of their ilk but there were some lone outposts that did take a chance with such and I think WMMR was one and that's why I really like that web site with so many of their air checks and all in stereo. My own collection of WBCN air checks is in a similar vein but I don't think I have as many of BCN as they do of WMMR.

Indeed, it is. But it was once a great Top 40 blowtorch. I have no idea why it was posted in this thread, but there's a great history of it online.

Re: post a cool rock music radio station you listen to

from the same people that have made available the great WMMR airchecks I posted about earlier I found a few other stations including the great WPIX which had a very eclectic playlist in 1979. WLIR was another excellent station in the NY area around the same time.

I never heard Roy Wood's Wizard on any area station that I recall except maybe WUWU and definitely no Asleep at the Wheel. Could be down to regional differences. CHUM FM played the Perth County Conspiracy and I doubt they got much air play in the US. CFNY similarly played a lot of local acts that were not played much anywhere else.

Anyway what a great playlist from WPIX including New Wave, oldies and just rock. WNEW was veering more mainstream at the time so this was a nice alternative just as CFNY was to CHUM FM and Q 107. WNEW was still however more adventurous than CHUM FM and Q.
