Exposure on the sat channel was one of the artists' major areas - if not their only area - of revenue.
Why SiriusXM dropping CBC Radio 3 is ‘potentially catastrophic’ for Canadian artists
On a separate note, I'm wondering how many here have ever tuned in digital-only CBC Radio 3, even once?

I have listened to CBC 3 since I am a subscriber of SiriusXM. But it's not my type of station. The format while interesting at times is all over the map for me. And if you like a song, you never know when it or the group will be played again. They aren't like a hit music station where the song pops up regularly.
However listening to the replacement station on channel 173 (The Verge) initially sounds about the same as CBC 3 to my ears. The music is similar so likely they are featuring many of the same artists. All indie and independent artists it seems.
Sirius still has CBC Radio One and the Radio Canada news channel on the line up.

I have probably sampled it but don't remember. I was a big fan of Night Lines which aired on the weekends overnights.
They should add Radio 3 to the HD signal on 99.1. HD 2 is 94.1 and HD 3 can be launched as Radio 3. Not sure how royalties work on HD but I would guess it would be a lot less than on Sirius XM but still something I would hope.

Does the CRTC have any "must carry" rules for satellite services?

They have to provide a certain number of Canadian programmed channels.

It's too bad for the artists, but it was kind of a false economy.
