Ex-Leaf & Sportsnet Host Nick Kypreos Now A Toronto Star Columnist

He brings his knowledge of hockey - and the Leafs - to the paper with a regular column, beginning with his first published on Tuesday.

Let’s talk hockey: Leafs takes and unapologetic opinion in the paper I grew up reading

My parents never ever subscribed to the Star. It was always The Telegram. I am sure that they never voted Liberal in elections had something to do their subscription choices.

hmmm ..

The Star was the only newspaper that ever made it through my family’s front door. I would wake up to newsprint spread out over my parents’ kitchen counter. That’s where I first learned of an American President resigning in the mid-’70s.

AUGUST 24, 1981 - The morning edition of The Toronto Star was launched.
OCTOBER 3, 1983 - Home delivery of the morning paper began.

Nick Kypreos Born: June 4, 1966 (age 56 years) .. so Nick was 15 in 1981 & 17 in 1983 ..

Nick's memory timeline seems a bit shaky ..

Regardless .. Nick can provide good analysis but needs to keep his "Don Cherry" tendencies at bay for his column to flourish ..

So that means Kypreos would have been 8 when Nixon resigned. I find it hard to believe an 8 year old would be interested in politics. I was 7 when the Kennedy/Nixon debate happened. My parents watched it. [There were actually four of them but most people only remember the first one] To me it was just two old guys blathering on about stuff I didn't care about. Plus the debate preempted tv shows I did care about.

Our family was similar to Mace's.  We were Toronto Telegram readers until they went out of business.  We became Star readers after the Tely folded but didn't like it at all.  Once we got used to the Star's format and features we enjoyed it a bit better.  But it was no Telegram.  Our family never got into buying the Sun.

Kypreos line about waking up to newsprint spread out over the kitchen counter could be accurate.  Remember a lot of teenagers 13 and 14 don't get up until 12 noon or 1pm on weekends or summer holidays.  The Star published many editions throughout the day prior to being a morning paper, so it is possible the papers were spread out over the counter when a teenage Nick got out of bed. And the big Saturday Star was traditionally delivered earlier than the rest of the week if his parents subscribed to the paper.

The Star and Tely both published their first edition that hit downtown around 11am. The second "Home" edition is what was delivered to subscribers. The "Final" Edition had an updated front page including the days final stock exchange results. The rest of this edition was identical to the one delivered to subscribers. The Globe & Mail published a late night edition at one time. They would update overnight news for morning copies. Sports scores were not included in the updates so the Globe was  not the paper to rely on for information about the previous nights hockey or baseball games.

Re: Ex-Leaf & Sportsnet Host Nick Kypreos Now A Toronto Star Columnist

I was born in 1960 and first became interested in politics with the 1968 Liberal leadership convention, which was held shortly after I turned eight. I remember my older sister discussing it with me as we looked at a Star article discussing the contenders. Later that year I became interested in American politics as well, and I remember clipping out a map from the Star that showed the results of the presidential election because we were discussing it in school.
