Lisa LaFlamme Speaks About Leaving CTV

https://www.blogto.com/city/2022/09/lisa-laflamme-finally-breaks-silence-ctv-exit-and-says-shes-cried-everyday/

Here's the Coles Notes version in the blogTO article.

If you subscribe to the Toronto Star you'll be able to read Ms. LaFlamme's conversation with Rosie in full and there's a link to it in the above article.

Would that Lisa was on a news desk and able to report on the seismic changes going on in Iran right now.

Re: Lisa LaFlamme Speaks About Leaving CTV

I agree Bell really screwed up here and Laflamme should not have been fired - but this really gave me pause:

On the day the Queen died — an eventuality for which Lisa and her usual CTV crew had long prepared, down to Buckingham Palace accreditation, after covering the sovereign’s Platinum Jubilee in late spring — “I couldn’t breathe.” The thought that she had no employer, no journalistic avenue, was agonizing. “I was despondent. Here’s the biggest story of our lives and I didn’t even have a job.”

Really? The entirely predictable death of a 96 year old is "the biggest story of our lives"? Bigger than 9/11? Bigger than the fall of the Berlin Wall? Bigger than Watergate? I get that Laflamme is a monarchist and this is a story she really wanted to cover and that it sucked being unemployed when it broke - but calling it the biggest story of your life isn't what I'd expect from a seasoned journalist.

Re: Lisa LaFlamme Speaks About Leaving CTV

I rarely watch CTV News so apparently I'm a rarity on this site. I will say though that this Lisa Laflamme issue has me perplexed. As I see it, she had a 35 year run and the final 10 as the National anchor. That's a great career, no matter what you think of her. The thing is, in this business there are several things that we all know and accept. The first one is, when there's a new sheriff in town (boss) , he or she gets to make their own choices. It's similar to a new coach or general manager of a sports team. The other thing we all should be aware of is television viewership is slipping, so there's a viable reason to get a younger anchor. I'm not saying it will work but I understand the reasoning. I also believe Omar will be easier to, for lack of a better word, control. There have been stories about the " mean girls". And I don't believe for a minute that this was about letting her hair go grey.
One more point: if CTV and Bell were smart ( and there's no indication they are), the department they would overhaul is their Public Relations staff. It would be difficult to find a major company that continually shoots itself in the foot more that Bell. They pretty much are running a how NOT to do it show.

The question is: Do they even have a PR department or did they long ago trash it as they did some of their
newsrooms?
Most important, when you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is quit digging.
