CHUM FM July 1970

I got a surprise donation of a CHUM FM air check from July 1970, recorded during the Mariposa weekend. Quality  is great as is the eclectic music mix. A big thanks to Ted McConvile for sending this to me:

@18:19 The what??? I've always known it to be the "True Love Cafe" owned and operated by Ben & ILene Dover. Never knew it was once known as the Castle George. WOW! Things change, times change!!

Re: CHUM FM July 1970

Fantastic quality, CHUM FM has always had a very clear natural sound.

Great aircheck, from the Golden Age of CHUM-FM. Spent a lot of time listening to it in the late '60s and early '70s. Then the suits took over and took the joy out of it.

Re: CHUM FM July 1970

Early 70's CHUM FM was probably the best radio station Toronto has ever had and early CFNY number two.

This particular air check is such great quality probably because of the TEAC tape machine used for the recording as well as the tuner. My own CHUM FM tapes were recorded on a lesser machine and I often recorded in slow speed and in mono ( single track) in order to save tape. The advantage of that method was that I was able to preserve a lot of radio.

Last year I uploaded from a reel to reel that I found in the wild of CHUM FM from 1986. The quality was not as good because  it was recorded at slow speed though stereo. I still have a portion of about 30 minutes from that same tape to upload. Includes Ingrid S. plus I think another 30 mins of her from around 1992 recorded on cassette. Will upload those at some point and I can't remember the quality of the cassette but it's probably better than slow speed reel to reel.  I just wanted to point out that in terms of quality there are a number of variables involved in old analog recordings. This one was made by a pro and everything was just about right including the recording volume.

Re: CHUM FM July 1970

I got a nice email from Steve Harris who is the first DJ on the clip. He had some nice memories about the air check and he also corrected the speed issue with the original  tape that becomes apparent when the Warner Bros ad starts. Plus he sent me a great pic of the CHUM FM on air staff at the time. I have updated all that on my original post. Speed corrected, Steve's memories plus the photo.
