Another Big Change In B.C. - Station Leaves FM For HD Only

The Vancouver station known as "The Peak" will no longer be at the summit, leaving the 102.7 frequency for HD only.

"If you tune into 102.7 FM on the dial after 1:02 p.m. on July 25, you will no longer hear The Peak. The Pattison-owned station will reveal Monday morning what that new format will be."

I can't quite remember a Canadian radio market undergoing so much change so fast.

Vancouver’s The Peak is leaving traditional FM radio. Here’s what that means

This opens things up for The Peak since there are virtually no regs for HD 2 stations.  Didn't Aaron or someone speculate that the main 102.7 would be moving to Pattison's NOW radio?  Or am I having a moment??

Re: Another Big Change In B.C. - Station Leaves FM For HD Only

Yeah, the main signal's going to be NOW.

This is really interesting. American stations often keep discarded stations somewhat alive on HD and streaming, but rarely with the airstaff intact.

They'll have to adjust the music, as it's currently functionally the same as Rogers' SONiC, and not that far off from CFOX. Perhaps back to their AAA roots. It needs to be something unique - a low CUME high TSL play. Once a listener decides they're going to stream, high & wide on a local level isn't going to cut it.

The stream will be the main focus, the HD signal just keeps the the streaming royalties down.

NOW is now on, with the Peak moving over solely to online and HD. I wonder how long it's going to last and whether the owners will try to promote it beyond the initial re-launch. If I were the morning crew that survived, I'd be putting out feelers right about now.

The Peak's website also features this rather unusual announcement.

I'm assuming Pattison is relying on mainly streaming to keep its listeners as opposed to getting them to tune in on HD2. I mean, how many of their listeners' shitbox vehicles have HD-capable radios?

Re: Another Big Change In B.C. - Station Leaves FM For HD Only

Durham's CJKX (95.9) and CHKX (94.7) have unique programing on HD2 and HD3.    HD2 (relay CIWV Vancouver) and HD3 (Oldies CKDO or CHTG) which are not listenable on regular Toronto FM...
....Are there any listeners? Do they show up in ratings?

Numeris isn't rating sub-channels. (Which did-in the Vancouver experiment)

No matter the delivery system - Vancouver is a very tough market.
