JUNO Awards and Billboard Music Awards This Sunday At the Same Time

I wonder who decided to move the JUNO Awards to this Sunday.  This is the same date as the Billboard Music Awards.  Both are scheduled for 8pm.  The JUNOs are on CBC and Billboard Awards on CTV.  Shrewd programming move by CTV.  Also at 8pm we have playoff hockey and American Idol at 8pm. This will be interesting to see how the ratings stack up on Sunday prime time.  Last year the JUNOS had slightly over 1 million viewers and the awards were in June.  The JUNOS this year will broadcast outside at the Molson Ampitheatre.

The Leafs won't be playing Sunday night, so the JUNO's should finish ahead of the NHL playoff telecast.

The Leafs won't be playing but Sportsnet has the Dallas/Calgary game scheduled if necessary and this game will be on the same time as the JUNOS.

Re: JUNO Awards and Billboard Music Awards This Sunday At the Same Time

The music business isn't really booming anywhere in North America and most of the world.  COVID made the situation even worse with the cancellation of concerts and live music venues which is the life blood for a lot of artists.  Many performers make very little money off of their recordings. Unless you are getting tens of millions of streams, you don't make a lot of money.  Current music on radio also isn't in good shape.

In terms of Canadian music, the golden age was in the early 80's into the early 2000's.  This was when Canadian domestic artists were selling good amounts of albums, singles and had great support from Much Music and various video shows on CBC and YTV. They also were able to perform in venues holding 2,5, 10,000 people and sell out, so concerts brought in a lot of money.   Artists could make a very good living even if they didn't break out internationally.

It is a different world in the music business today, not just here, but everywhere.

True. However, the  Flames won't attract nearly as many viewers as the Leafs would.

If Calgary plays on Sunday, ratings will be very strong.  You are correct not as high as Toronto on Saturday but still big ratings, especially out west.

Well now there will be a game 7 on Sunday night. Ratings could be HUGE considering there is a possibility the Leafs season will be finished Saturday night. They are 12-13 in game 7's in team history. Home ice is no guarantee of success for them. Montreal proved that last year and TB is a far superior team to the Habs.
