CFRB Temporarily Brings Live Radio Back To 7 PM Weekday Slot

Since Jamil Jivani was fired from Bell Media in January, there have been almost nothing but rerolls after 7 PM on CFRB and other stations along the network. That ends, at least temporarily, on Monday, when Bell debuts a new show on at least two of its stations, starting at 7 PM.

Mark Towhey, who has political experience having worked for the Rob Ford mayoral campaign, will host an actual real-live show called "Ontario Votes," in advance of the June 2nd provincial election. (The writ is expected to officially drop this week.) It's not exactly clear how long this new show is (I suspect it may only last an hour) but the website indicates it will air on both CFRB and CFRA.

Not sure what's on the other Ontario stations in the chain or whether it will be picked up by them as we inch closer to election day, but it's nice to see actual relevant and live programming back on the air on these stations, even if just for a short time.

Apparently this new show is going to be 4 hours (!) long, which seems like a very lengthy timeslot for a one topic show.

So Rob Ford's ex chief of staff is going to help a show covering the provincial election? Has CFRB become Fox News?

That does seem might excessive, although the current website schedule block and Mark Towhey's retweeting confirms it. That's a heck of a lot of pundits, talking heads, and ordinary callers to hear out every day.

One possibility is they'll just air huge chunks of interviews done elsewhere like Evan Solomon's show and Towhey will throw to those and do some original content as well, so it's not just him for 4 hours.

Another possibility is it's only 1 or 2 hours of live content and they just immediately re-roll that in a block after the fact to try to get listeners who couldn't tune in earlier. Same things happens for the "Late Showgram with...well, David Cooper" where the last hour (4-5 am ET) is a rebroadcast of the first, I believe. It's not even a "best of" of other segments throughout that night assembled quickly (or wasn't the last time I listened), but the literal first hour aired again.

It's certainly possible. Not even experienced broadcasters like Evan Solomon or Jerry Agar do four hours. And to have your debut show on against the Leafs' first playoff game? Even if it was only an hour, it might feel like four!

Looks like you were partially right. While the show is live throughout the entire four hours, they've made it clear they're going to rerun certain interviews done earlier in the evening "in case you missed it." For example, they mentioned that the Siobhan Morris segment will be done live around 7 PM, and then rerun after 9 o'clock.

Still a long show, especially for one topic.

This is great for Mark.  He’s one of the most intelligent and passionate hosts.  I’d be willing to bet Mark loves having 4-hours of airtime.  No one’s listening for 4-hours anyways.  And you have to target people that listen for 10-minutes several times a day.  Also, Mark is a smart guy and will likely find interesting ways to insert other topics which will have a dotted line back to the election.
Just two cents.
