This has been going on for a while, but it's the first time it's actually sunk in for me. For years, CFRB has been doing its double "Free For All Roundtable" at 7:47 and 8:47 AM on Moore in the Morning. I'm guessing the numbers for those quarter hours are pretty good, since the feature has been airing on the station for several years.
Early Thursday, I was out walking the dog and while 'RB was in a spot cluster, I tuned into 640. That's when I heard Greg Brady introduce a segment called "Chatterbox," complete with a pre-produced intro. It's essentially the host and two guest pundits throwing around the biggest stories of the day and offering their opinions and observations about what's going on in the world.
In other words, an almost exact copy of The Roundtable. The only real difference is they're smart enough to start it about six or seven minutes before the competition begins theirs. I guess if you can't beat 'em - and the ratings show that 640 never has been able to - you might as well copy them. Only just do it a little earlier.

This reminds me of this thread - but at that time it seems they didn't have the "Chatterbox" naming or "branding". I understand the 640 morning show is evolving as it finds its groove (so said Amanda Cupido on a recent Toronto Mike appearance).

Having a regular panel is not unique and certainly isn't a concept that was invented by CFRB. I'm actually surprised it's not more common.

You're right of course. It's just that the two programming elements are scheduled at approx. the same time on the same competing morning shows and have roughly the exact same format. I don't think that's a coincidence.

Panels abound everywhere, and 640 have been using them across the shows. Oakley had one or has one as did The Rush. Alex Pierson has 2 and so have other RB shows in the slot I think you may be overthinking things but I'll play along, as Greg Brady did not have a round table at that time was he copying the CBC Radio 1?

"Chatterbox" isn't a clever name for the feature, it's a derogatory term for someone who talks incessantly. "Chatter That Matters" the show on 1010 can be interesting depending on the guest but it's a lightweight name verging on being too cutsie.
I notice 1010 has branched out with their roundtable contributors, to include a teacher and a farmer.
What's the best number of contributors to have on a segment. Four can be too many, three is awkward and there's usually someone who gets the short end of the stick voicing their views. Note to contributors, if you take more than four intakes of breath when making a point, your response may be too long .

It's just the timing of it, not just the fact of how it's presented. It's on at the exact same time, give or take five minutes, as RB's, which I'm guessing (and it's only that) their internal info told them was drawing listeners away to the 1010 segment. The answer? Start our own with the exact same format, but do it earlier to get a jump on the competition.
Hey, I could be wrong. But the fact they used to have a straight one-on-one interview segment in that time slot that's now been changed to a clone of The Roundtable doesn't seem to be an odd or random coincidence.
Just my two cents, which is probably why they eliminated the penny!

As long as Robert Turner is one of them, I'm good. He's a sharp guy who often keeps the entire panel of personalities (especially the politicians) honest or at least calls them on their B.S. I wish he was on there all the time rather than just once a week.

I agree! Robert Turner is very sharp and I like listening to him.

I've got a lot of time for Robert Turner.
Is he on on a specific and regular day RadioActive, or does it vary?
I listen to MITM on a regular basis, pretty much every day but not the whole show. I'd make it a point to tune in when he's on, whatever day he's on. Appointment radio indeed.
Wish 1010 would give Robert his own show. 🤞🗣️🎙️

Of course, he's on and off every day kibbitzing and keeping Moore grounded - and sometimes correcting him. But as for the Roundtables, I believe the day is Thursday when he's a featured player. Could be wrong and if I am, I'm sure someone here will correct me.
