So it occurs to me that many participants of this forum listen to 640 Toronto, and my guest on Toronto Mike'd tomorrow is Amanda Cupido, Director of Talk and Talent at the station.
So if anyone here has a question they'd like me to ask Amanda, or a comment for her, I'll collect them from here before our chat tomorrow morning.

It's a weird question, but I would like to know why their paid time shows (like the injury lawyers for example) are interrupted for commercials. If you buy the hour, don't you own that hour? Why would you bother pausing to hear from another advertiser when you're paying for 50-60 minutes of that airtime?
Similarly: why do they insist on starting Alex Pierson's show at 6:30 PM, when it's going to be interrupted for an hour on Mondays and Wednesdays, only to resume 50 minutes later? Talk about killing a show's momentum and encouraging tune-out. Wouldn't it make more sense to air Global National at 6:30, then start Pierson's program at 7 every night, for consistency, if nothing else. She could then go straight through until 10 with original interviews, instead of repeating that first half hour at 9:30 PM.
And finally, I know she wasn't there then, but I'd be curious to hear what she thinks about what really happened to Mike Stafford and Peter Shurman. Plus, the accusations of sexism and racism at Corus that drove Supriya Dwivdei out of radio.
I highly doubt she'll actually seriously address any of the latter, but her response should be interesting.
One last thing - although she's now with Corus, she spent many years with CFRB. I'd be very interested to hear what she thinks about the way Bell decimated what was once "Ontario's Authoritative News Voice," leaving its once vaunted and award-winning newsroom almost empty.

I'm curious why programmers at commercial talk radio stations in Toronto tend to skew their programming to the right when, if voting patterns are any indication, the potential audience in Toronto and the GTA tends to be more centrist or left of centre? Don't 1010 and 640 write off most of their potential listeners by prioritizing conservative talk?

I think the answer to that is the fact that those on the left and even centre don't gravitate to AM talk radio. The fact that CBC radio handily beats the commercial AM talkers vindicates the the voting patterns . I rarely listen to AM talk radio but if I come accross it, it strkes me that the callers and even some of the hosts are in their own bubble and that bubble is the target audience.

Cupido just hired her friend Pay Chen to lefty it up more than it already is.
Pierson and Oakley are the only remaining on-air talent unafraid to maintain a conservative frame of reference.
The same phenomena is occurring at 1010 with a lackey PD installing homogeneous socialist presenters straight outa Plateau Mont-Royal.
Of course this is not surprising. Contemplate the Vice Presidents who operate and direct these two radio divisions (Rogers as well). This is not iron ore mining after all. It's glaringly clear and has an unspoken dictum; "One who votes Justin Trudeau does not place Ezra Levant on the payroll".

& whom do you label "homogeneous socialist presenters" on Newstalk 1010?

Forget Agar, Towhey, Oakley and the rest. Despite what some here think, they're fairly mainstream.
If you really want to hear extreme right-wing radio in Canada, you'll have to tune in Sauga960 between 1 and 3 PM weekdays. Marc Patrone is a huge booster of Donald Trump, insists the last U.S. presidential election was "stolen" and thinks it was wrong to disperse the "freedom fighters" in Ottawa. He also brings on guests like Randy Hillier and others who are, to be charitable, somewhat beyond the fringe.
He's so far to the right that his show is the only one on the station that airs with a disclaimer after each commercial break that the opinions expressed are not those of Sauga960. I'm frankly surprised there aren't more complaints about some of the things he says. Or I would be if anyone was actually listening to him.
And to think, he was once a CRTC Commissioner! (Maybe a future controversial guest on T.O. Mike's podcast? That would be pretty wild.)
That said, I think this thread is in danger of veering way off topic. I'm sure Toronto Mike would appreciate any questions for Amanda Cupido, although there's nothing wrong with asking about whether a station politically skews more one way than the other.

Mz Cupido. There's one in your employ. I think he goes by Oakley. He just is not delivering. Where are we with that?
EDIT: Also. What will we be doing to help deradicalise the listenership?

Questions for Amanda
What guidelines were given to you about the direction the company wants to move forward with.
Do you have hiring/firing powers.
How will you restore the confidence of the 640 fanbase after the last year of upheavals with the exit of Mike Stafford and other less than positive changes. Any chance Mike Stafford would return.
Whose career in Canadian radio do you admire and respect.
Any plans for increasing the number of women and POC as on-air talent.
Sidebar: If Amanda gives one or more PR spin answers, how much does Mike push back? Not saying she will but one wonders how much wiggle room her bosses have given her for the truth. I think we'll be able to tell within the first ten minutes how up front she's going to be.
Looking forward to hearing your interview Mike.

As an addendum to the above, it's worth noting that, as odious as what Stafford said was, he did not say it on air but rather during a closed staff meeting. Granted he never should have uttered that nonsense at all.
But is it right that he was removed for something his listeners never got to hear?

Sounds to me like Stafford being fired was more an HR issue than a PD issue since his firing occurred because of offence caused to other employees.

I would ask -- as a faithful listener since 2001, Why should I listen to 640 with Stafford and Shurman gone? You know both reasons for their dismissals were bullshite.

Have you listened 4-6?

Well, at least Richard Syrett was never on the CRTC! And no, I never listen to his show, whether it was on 740 or 960.
I must be part of the conspiracy...

I listened to the podcast and found it quite interesting. One of the revelations is that there's no chance of Ryan Doyle coming to 640 under her watch, despite some listeners calling for him to be given his own show.
As far as my question was concerned, her answer was quite illuminating:

She revealed that as of March 21st, the paid show will air from 6:30 -7 PM, with Pierson's show starting at 7 o'clock, straight through until 10 - without the repeat half hour. Great minds think alike, etc. etc. Thanks for the answer, Toronto Mike - and Amanda! Nice to know I wasn't the only one wondering about this.

Toronto Mike is to interviewers what Ron Howard is to directors.
Would it be possible to do with a Toronto Mike episode what the Hollywood Reporter does so well, and gather a number of well known radio personalities to shoot the breeze about the good old days and what it's been like working through the last few years and maybe even the direction they hope radio will go... there may be people who are reluctant to appear solo that would feel comfortable with a group.
How about Q's morning show team with John D. for one show, and 1010's John Moore and Robert Turner for another.
p.s Amanda acquitted herself well. If she has a decent budget, good things could happen at 640.

Amazing it took so long for 640 to do it. Sometimes it takes bringing in a new person from outside to see the obvious and fix it.

I believe John Moore was booked but had to apologetically cancel at the last minute due to Bell PR's objections over a key one of their talent appearing outside their brand, so I don't know that he's likely to appear anytime soon on TM. Corus, meanwhile, freely "offered up" Cupido and supported the appearance.
