Canadians always seem to go crazy when American TV notices anything about its northern neighbour. So it was a big surprise when, in its final segment on Sunday, the long running show did an entire 15-minute segment on a place called Fogo Island, a very far away location in Newfoundland, a spot most Canadians have probably never even heard of.
But if they watched the still highly rated CBS show on Sunday, they know about it now. Including how it's located in the middle of nowhere (even more so than "Come From Away") with one big exception - a $40 million resort that looks like a fish out of water.
You can see the piece online here.

Actually it's not true that nobody in Canada has heard of Fogo Island. It is actually quite well known. Yes, Americans have probably not heard of it but Fogo Island is familiar to anyone who knows that classic Newfie song "I's the By." The chorus goes "Fogo Twillingate Morton's Harbour all around the circle."

Have to admit I didn't have the foggiest notion that it existed. Or should that be the Fogo-ist notion?

60 Minutes is rarely in the top 30 in Canada. Personally I haven't watched it in years.

Actually, I heard it on the CBS/Audacy-owned radio stations, which air it at exactly 7 PM Sunday nights, regardless of football delays on TV. (WBBM, WCBS and WBZ are three that you can get here reliably.) At a time when there's nothing much on the radio and the dog needs to go out, it's quality content.
That's where I heard this and then went to the net to see the piece, which I found pretty interesting. The woman behind that multi-million resort on the island is certainly an unorthodox businesswoman and good for her for doing the impossible in a place where it would seem very unlikely.
As for the ratings, 60 Minutes still does extremely well in the U.S., which is really the only place it matters to CBS. According to the latest numbers, it was #3 overall for the week. Even with audiences declining for over-the-air TV, that's a pretty impressive showing, especially when you consider outside of football, it beat every single entertainment show on every other network. Not bad for a more than 50-year-old show!

And worse, because CBS doesn't allow any pre-release of the show, one of the few that doesn't do that, Global fills in the time with news. They essentially vamp till "60" is ready and that makes it almost impossible to time it properly. Week after week, they literally cut out of a story in the middle of a word, so they can switch to the ticking stopwatch intro at the same time as CBS.
I'm not sure what else they can do, since NFL end times can be very unpredictable, but it does not make them look very good on a weekly basis.

It must have been unbelievably bad this past Sunday with both the Buf/TB and SF/Cin games going into OT.
