Football Huge Ratings in US, Here Not So Much

Always interesting to compare the network TV ratings between what is actually watched in Canada and the US.   To start off the new season the differences are very stark.

For the week of September 27-October 3rd according to NUMERIS the top 10 shows in Canada were all scripted dramas, with The Good Doctor as the highest rated show with 1.882 million viewers on CTV.

In the US for the same week only one scripted show made it in the top 10 with NCIS on CBS at number 8 with 8.06 million viewers.  Other shows in the top ten were The Voice on NBC number 10 with 7.44 million viewers, and 60 Minutes on CBS as the 6th highest rated program with 10.32 million viewers.  It is interesting to note that neither the Voice or 60 Minutes were even in the top 30 in Canada.

Seven of the top ten shows in the US week of September 27-October 3rd were NFL Football, including the top  five with the highest ratings.  In Canada the only sports in the top 30 were Blue Jays Baseball with 1.3 million viewers at number 13.  The single NFL related showing in Canada was at the bottom of the top 30 with Sunday's NFL early show on CTV with 908 thousand watching.  No actual NFL games made it in the top 30 in Canada.

See US and Canadian broadcast ratings for the week of September 28th here from TV News Check and Numeris...

Re: Football Huge Ratings in US, Here Not So Much

Thanks for explaining torontostan. So NFL Early was the total of the various NFL games that CTV was showing early on Sunday.  I know they show different games in the west than what is on in the east.   NFL Early would not include CTV2's early game correct?  CTV2 also show a different game out west.   And it looks like NFL late games didn't make the top 30.

One thing I forgot to mention was that The Good Doctor which was the number one show in Canada, didn't make the top 20 according to the ratings from tvnewscheck.

Correct! It's not just east/west, but rather it depends on the individual affiliate (see below). In the US it's a real mess and 506sports.com posts the regional map for each week in case you're interested. As the season progresses they try to show games with playoff implications to the local market.

Here's how NFL Early was distributed on Oct 3rd in Canada:

• Game 1 – Kansas City @ Philadelphia
CTV Atlantic, CTV Saskatchewan, CTV Alberta and CTV BC
• Game 2 – Cleveland @ Minnesota
CTV Winnipeg, CTV Northern Ontario, CTV Ottawa, CTV2 Toronto and CTV2 London/Windsor
• Game 3 – Houston @ Buffalo
CTV Toronto, CTV Kitchener and CTV Montreal
• Game 4 – Detroit @ Chicago
CTV2 Ottawa
• Game 5 – Carolina @ Dallas
CTV2 Atlantic, CTV2 Alberta, CTV2 BC, TSN1/5 and RDS

So as you can see it's difficult to use the publicly available Numeris data to determine if our NFL ratings are in line with the US ones. You'd have to see the NFL Early viewership on CTV, CTV2 as well as TSN and RDS. Plus Bell has the rights to NFL RedZone via the TSN site and app which probably gets somewhere around 30,000+ AMA if I had to guess.

Wow, that is odd! Americans don't seem to enjoy listening to what real-life good doctors have to say these days either! Joking aside, maybe I'm onto something. Wouldn't be surprised if the pandemic has indeed hurt medical dramas since their storylines remind us too much of the present or seem to tame compared to what American's have gone through.

I know the guy who runs 506sports.com, he’s been doing those maps for a long, long time. It’s a lot of work, going through the schedules for every CBS and FOX affiliate  every week throughout the NFL season - it’s not data supplied directly to him.

Fascinating! I assumed there must be some listings database they pull from, but turns out it's a guy going to a bunch of station websites. Tell him I say thanks! Can't believe how complex it all is week after week.

"NFL Early" on the Numeris report refers to all 1PM (ET) games on CTV combined (not the pre-game show). The only games that are rated individually in that report are SNF, MNF and TNF. Of course anyone who's willing to pay can see the individual game breakdowns.

Also don't forget that the Canadian report shows total day audience whereas the US report is primetime only, so you won't see "NFL early" on there. I'd think the NFL Early or NFL Late windows would actually rate better than the national windows, since the games are regionalized and therefore more likely to attract people watching their favourite teams. You also wouldn't see SNL, national evening newscasts, or any popular daytime/syndicated shows on that US top-20 list.

60 Minutes not rating well in Canada isn't a huge shock to me. It's had a heavy focus on US politics this past few years, and up until this season it aired on "IndieNet" before landing at Global. I imagine there's pockets of Canada that aren't very accustomed to it since it was never given network treatment here.

I'll be interested to see how the NHL rates this season, both in the US on their new national contracts (ESPN, Turner) as well as in Canada. It'll take a few seasons, but I believe the NHL made a very smart move picking those two contracts..... except that many of ESPN's games are streaming on ESPN+ only and not airing on their cable channels.

60 Minutes spent a number of years on CHCH and other “IndieNet” stations, but it was on Global in Ontario for many years, dating back to at least the 80s. If I’m not mistaken it moved to CH while both it and Global were under CanWest ownership, and just stuck on CH after it was sold. I have no idea if it ever aired on other CanWest stations outside Ontario pre-2010.

CanWest’s Prime channel also used to air 60 Minutes II.

Showbuzz Daily is an excellent site if you want to see how series do against their direct competition. Ratings share are broken down into three categories W18-49, M18-49 and 50+ With a little exploring, you can also find ratings for the network morning shows, evening news, late night and Sunday AM Political gabfests. The Sunday list does show NFL ratings for 1pm and 4:25pm games. However, these numbers are for the primary game that FOX and CBS send to their affilliates.                                                                                                                                                             That 506 Sports site is a weekly must visit for any NFL viewer. Maps are posted every Wednesday afternoon and the guy who puts this together lives in New Brunswick. There's the 506 connection. With the Buffalo, Seattle and CTV affilliates, plus TSN there are usually 4-5 early and 3-4 late games available each week.

Re: Football Huge Ratings in US, Here Not So Much

torontostan: I have some U.S. NHL numbers for you courtesy of Showbuzz Daily. Tuesday's opening night Pit/TB game on ESPN drew 983,000. The second half of their DH [Sea/Vegas] had 783,000. At the same time TBS was drawing 3.065M for the Mil/Atl early MLB playoff game and 5.145M for the SF/LAD late telecast. On Wednesday, the NYR/Wash game on TNT had 817.000 viewers. A WNBA playoff game, in the same timeslot on ESPN, drew 789,000.

Thanks!! I'd say that's a pretty good start for those networks covering NHL in the US.
