Will Cdn. Radio & TV Employees Be Forced To Get COVID Vaccinations?
The federal government has ruled that all its public service employees must be vaccinated starting this fall, possibly as early as October. For the most part, that encompasses people who work closely with the public - most especially the marine, rail and airline industries.
It's not immediately clear if it also means one other profession that falls under federal guidelines - radio and TV employees.
It's my hope that most of those people who make their living in broadcasting would have no objection to getting a shot, but I'm also sure there are inevitably some who are either hesitant or against getting the injection at all. Will that force a choice between a jab or a job? It seems unlikely, but it could be that radio and TV types who refuse the shot would be forced to be continually tested daily before they could come into their station.
Will it extend to them? As they say in the biz, stay tuned!

People are getting fired left right and centre from jobs in the performance industry if they've refused to get vaccinated. The Offspring fired their drummer, a famous Broadway star was asked to leave a show...
Imagine you work in radio and are asked to represent the station at a giant concert, with thousands of people, like the enormous gig rock band Gorillaz held in Britain last week to say thank you to NHS workers. Do you say yes. Can you say no... Probably not.

On Global BC’s noon news hour today, the anchor said that the vaccination rules would apply to them as broadcasting staff.

Well... that is a nice sentiment and all... but it ain't gonna happen without Federal Labour legislation...

I guess they're federally regulated by virtue of their broadcast license.

How does that federal regulation extend to Covid vaccination? I get it, with rail and air travel, but my understanding is it's for interprovincial travel only. No one is travelling on the airwaves. I don't see CRTC or Industry Canada regulation extending to vaccines... I'd be interested in any evidence to the contrary.

The news release stated vaccinations were to be mandatory "across the federal public service" and that "they expect Crown corporations and federally regulated agencies" to follow suit. It also noted they will require employees "in the federally regulated air, rail, and marine transportation space" to be to be fully immunized.
Broadcasting is federally regulated but it is not an "agency" of the federal government nor involved in transportation.
I would seem unlikely that this mandate would (or could) be extended to private businesses such as broadcasters.
