That time of the year?

Looks like Sinclair/Fox 29 and Dish Network are having "relationship" issues... again...

Sinclair has upped their game a bit this year...  in addition to the cg "crawl" on the screen, they also have produced a spot outlining to Dish subscribers the programming that they will miss out on if Dish drops Fox29 from their line-up.

The bigger picture is that this involves Sinclair's 108 station line up, all ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX affiliates plus independents that are owned by Sinclair and are currently carried on Dish...

The current re-transmission consent /  carriage agreement between Sinclair and Dish Network is set to expire on Monday, August 16th...

Re: That time of the year?

Many here may not be all that aware or care about Dish Network, a U.S.-only based satellite service not available in Canada. But its battles are intensely fascinating and I've been following them for years. It's run by Charlie Ergen, a maverick (some would say cheapskate) CEO who's extremely polarizing and has been involved in countless standoffs like this over the last few decades, as station ownership groups demand more money for the right to let Dish carry their signals.

Ergen insists he's doing this to keep costs down for subscribers but in the end, the monthly bills still seem to keep going up. His most famous standoff was with WarnerMedia's HBO. The most popular pay cable service had never been dropped by any cable or satellite company in its 34-year history, until Ergen got into a war with AT&T (which just happens to own WarnerMedia, HBO and rival DirectTV - no coincidence there!) and the pay giant was dropped from Dish.

That dispute lasted almost three years (!) and was only recently settled late last month, with both sides finally coming to an agreement that also involved HBO Max.

No matter how much his customers in affected markets complain about losing channels, Ergen refuses to give in and these blackouts of certain stations can last for weeks or months - often years - even as some customers defect to other services and never come back.

It's an amazing war most here aren't even aware of. And it seems that, as long as Ergen is in charge, it's never going to end.

Re: That time of the year?

Back in 2008, WIVB got into a disagreement with Time-Warner cable over carriage fees. Then owner Lin Television demanded an increase of .50 per subscriber [.25 for ch 4 and .25 for ch 23]  The agreement ended on Thursday October 2nd. WIVB/WNLO disappeared Friday October 3rd. Of course the NFL Bills were playing Sunday October 5th. WIVB openly advocated for Time-Warner customers to switch to Dish Network, while Time-Warner distributed free antennas to its customers. It took until October 29th for a deal to be reached. WIVB disappeared from Dish Network for 9 days in 2011 and slightly less than two months from Direct TV in 2019.
