Bell Wasn't The First With An All Comedy Radio Format In Canada

There are only four stations on the air in Canada that are all comedy - Funny 820 in Hamilton, Funny 1040 in Vancouver, Funny 1290 in Winnipeg, and Funny 1060 in Calgary. (Many wonder how they can survive since none of them get much in the way of ratings - although it costs next to nothing to run them.)

But it turns out, Bell wasn't the first with this unique format in Canadian radio. The original and first all comedy format apparently belonged to a station called CFHA (presumably with an accent on the "HA") in St. John, New Brunswick - on FM, no less. The station went on the air in 2003 and according to a small blurb at the time in Maclean's Magazine, it had four staff members, with the G.M. working as morning man and the sales manager doing afternoon traffic reports.

The originator claims he had the idea for the format at least 20 years before sign on, but couldn't figure out a way to make it work financially. Apparently, he never did - the station was sold three years later and switched to a rock format.

Today, its legacy is equally odd. Its current format is something called "Inspirational Country," an apparent mix of religion and modern country. And while its call letters remain the same, it brands itself as "CKO-2," (with CKO-1 being a station in Moncton), an equally puzzling choice to resurrect a reminder of a failed all-news network.

And as if that wasn't enough, it may be the only radio station in Canada that's affiliated with Fox News, running its radio newscasts at the top of the hour.

And there's surely nothing Funny about that.

Well, since MPs all have seats in the House of Commons, does that make them sit-down comics?

I suspect the station owners are unaware of the original CKO and the name is just a coincidence, especially since it's not a news station. The proper call letters for CKO-1 is CKOE which is supposed to stand for Chirst, King of Everything.
