Ex-CRTC Vice Chair Angry Over Dismantling Of CBC's Short Wave Service

Peter Menzies claims his former colleagues at the federal regulator are ignoring the original point of Radio Canada International.

Neither CRTC nor CBC following the law by allowing dismantling Radio Canada International

I remember seeing RCI's operation at the Corpse HQ over twenty years ago. Three rooms. Two people. Yes, by commercial broadcast standards of the time it was clearly opulent.

RCI has been absent from short wave for years. Their transmitter site in Sackville NB, has long ago been dismantled

I despaired when CBC flipped Radio II from a mostly jazz and classical music format to  their current all garage band format.
I gave up on them completely when they scrapped RCI.

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it.

This is all coming too late. RCI was essentially dismantled a decade ago when it left shortwave and its budget was cut by 80% and has been a skeleton operation since then. If Canada wants an international broadcasting service it would have to be built almost from scratch at this point, even if it were an online-only entity

Engineers who can operate a SW XMTR are becoming scarce.
