CFRB Weekend Programming Becomes More Clear After Bell Cuts

Some here were wondering what NT1010's weekend schedule might look like now that people like Ted Woloshyn and Mark Towhey are no longer taking up airtime (although the latter did guest host Evan Solomon's Show on Friday, so they haven't cut all ties with him.) No word on Sunday yet, beyond Trafford and an extra hour of Trivia, but here's what's happening Saturdays.

The day starts at midnight with four hours of iHeart Radio podcasts. The first is called, "Stuff They Don't Want You To Know,"  a Coast-to-Coast-style show that explores the usual conspiracy subjects. That's followed at 2 AM by a similar themed podcast, called "Stuff To Blow your Mind." And then at 4 AM, there's yet a third download, called "Stuff You Should Know," which looks back at some weird historical happenings.

Dave Trafford comes back at 6 AM - without Claude Feig.

At 9 AM, Frank Cohn's long running home improvement show continues, followed by the Animal House veterinarian show.

The Woloshyn replacement shows are:

11 AM - "The Best Of John Moore," with some reroll and some new content.

1 PM - The paid "Disability Law Show" at 1.

2-4 PM - Iain Grant's "Ask The Experts" (glad to see the original founder of this version of SOWNY made it through the cuts!)

4-6 PM - Something called "Newstalk 1010 Programming,"  which I strongly suspect will be more rerolls, although perhaps they're not even sure themselves.

6 PM - CTV Toronto News is simulcast as is now the new normal in that timeslot.

7-11 PM - The old "Viewpoints With Todd van der Heyden" is gone. In its place? More podcasts. "Eat This," with nutritionist Lianne Phillipson, Richard Crouse, Christopher Ward's "Famous Lost Words," and Jann Arden fill in for four hours of pre-taped programming.

11 PM - "CTV National News" and likely the local 11:30 CFTO newscast end the night.

Hardly a glowing line-up and outside of Trafford, Animal House, possibly Grant and few of the paid time shows, it appears there's nothing live most of the day. As for news? It's not clear, but since they fired everyone who could do it, I suspect they'll be forced to either skip it, get someone from CFRA to fill in, or far more likely take the Canadian Press hourly report. That would mean the same newscast is on GNR640 and CFRB at exactly the same time for much of the day.

Strange bedfellows, indeed.

Anyone with money is welcome to buy a week-end timeslot, I'm sure.
Whatever happened to those Fat Absorb paid advertising radio ads that used to air years ago?
(may have been on 1050)

I know AM 740 does air paid advertising Saturday (&Sunday?) mornings for at least 30 minutes or so.
No shame there!  Ad revenue is ad revenue, right?

Re: CFRB Weekend Programming Becomes More Clear After Bell Cuts

According to RB's website, here's the new Sunday line-up:

6-9 AM: Dave Trafford

9 AM -12 PM: Sunday Morning Trivia

12 -1 PM: - Simply Real Estate

1 - 2 PM: Employment Law Show

2 - 3 PM: Sunday Money Show

3 - 5 PM: "Newstalk 1010 Programming" (Likely rerolls)

5 - 6 PM: Tech Talk

6 - 7 PM: CTV Toronto News

7 - 8 PM: Question Period

8 - 9 PM: TED Radio Hour

9  -10 PM: Exponential W/Amanda Lang

10 - 11 PM: Hot Talk

11 PM - 12 AM: CTV National News/CTV Toronto News

12 - 1 AM: Munk Debates

1- 5 AM: Stuff (various podcasts that all begin with that word.)

I noticed that, despite the site's outline on Saturday, not everything aired when it was listed. It looks like they're substituting podcasts for live programing. It means Tim Hudak's show is also gone, along with Mark Towey and Nia Singh.

1010 is still running a promo for the Sunday Money Show which says the show airs at 11:00 a.m. They just ran it again.

Yes, I noticed a few of those, including one for Saturday, when one of the money shows was said to be at 11 AM, despite the fact The Best Of John Moore is now scheduled there.

Do you think it's possible they fired the person responsible for the promos? If so, the irony couldn't be lost on anyone.

Re: CFRB Weekend Programming Becomes More Clear After Bell Cuts

Why would they drop Coast to Coast AM overnights? Is it that expensive?
Radio is at its best when it's conveying a live human voice. Wasting 50,000 watts on podcasts is just sad.

Also, why cancel the Early Edition at 5:00 AM, just to have John Moore join Robert Turner to start Moore in the Morning thirty minutes earlier? This makes no sense.

I just heard CKTB carry CFRB's entire newscast at 2 PM, complete with NT1010 IDs and Toronto weather, along with local GTA stories. Great way to serve the Niagara area. I wonder if London and Ottawa heard this, too.

Call me a socialist, but that spectrum belongs to the people of Canada. The licensee should be required to operate it in the public service, which includes local origination news and analysis, not endless podcast re-rolls.

I waited all day to hear Earl Warren, and nothing, absolutely nothing.

I don't have a big problem with a podcast on the air.  A podcast is a radio show, essentially.  Rerolls have always been inexcusable in my opinion.  TV does it because of the high cost of producing episodes of scripted shows.  Radio shouldn't have to.

Yikes! A bit of a mess of various problems this weekend on 1010, as well. Obviously all are, well, adjusting to the recent Bell new reality, be it on human or tech/scheduling fronts. Traffic bumper music entering at the start of the newscast instead of a little bit into it and being mixed too hot, a news pre-record inexplicably stopping 30 seconds in, wrong "Next weather in the 7 am news!" tag heard at 7:05 am, etc.  I hope it gets better.

I didn't fully understand that either, since Turner is in the building and still doing his morning show technical producing duties. One thing I can think of is that Turner didn't do his own technical board op'ing for his own show - he utilized the trailing end of the shift of the overnight board op - and perhaps that overnight person's position is gone/centralized. Therefore Turner can't do his own show this way - not to mention no newsroom folks left anymore to "join him" - but the John Moore half hour earlier start is likely because they didn't want to lose a 5 am slot potential to grab listeners early before the choice would be the other media outlets that start at 5:30 am (like AM640).

I remembered reading this NYTimes article years ago about early morning TV shows starting at 4:30 am and even 4:00 am - acknowledging longer commutes and non-standard hours.

What a spectacularly pathetic landing for the once mighty CFRB (Ontario's Authoritative News Voice).
